Its an interesting "religion".
Read this.
Whether you find, the whole concept absurd and ridiculus, or whether it stirs something deep within you, depends on your interpretation.

I'm so bummed that Scientology is getting so much press lately, because I go to the Church of Religious Science and it's NOT Scientology, it's extremely cool. Anyway.
The story re: Scientology IS a story! The founder was this guy that wrote comic books in the 30's and 40's; he was in the service briefly but was relieved of his duties when he started playing target practice with what we now call hispanics, but then when he was in Mexico they were Mexicans. So he writes this book called Dianetics, and it was supposed to be a novel, about people taking religion to the NTH degree, becoming fanatics about this religion. He was making fun of this religion in his book and so many people took it seriously that he decided to change his snake oil to create a new religion. And there we have Scientology.

IMO: The Church of Scientology is a dangerous cult.
Scientology is a set of practices developed by L Ron Hubabrd in the 1950's. It is not endorsed or accepted by the scientific community, and infact is repeatedly referred to, in print, as a pseudo-science and pure quackery. It is accepted to be a cult by all the leading cult experts and relevant groups (don't go to Cult Awareness Network as they have been taken over by scientology after they went brankrupt). Some governments have even banned scientology outright, others keep a close eye on them.
It practices are there to cause indoctrination/brain washing/social & mind control. They disarm a person's critical thinking ability, and stops people looking for information outside of the CofScientology. They slowly break a person's defences down till they will accept whatever is told to them.
They claim it is to help people on the 'Road to Total Freedom' that they will become a better human being, improve their communication, IQ, health, etc. They claim to be the only method that really works on helping and improving the world, and the world will be doomed without them. In 75 trillion years Ron is the first to work out the truth behind mankind and all our problems. First it is Engrams, things that lodge in your brain when you are unconscience or when you are born, or even in past lives that cause the problems. They use 'auditing' to get rid of these. Then once you are brainwashed enough they will tell you actually the problem is Body Thetans (ancient alien souls) that inhabit your body, after being exploded in various volcanoes 75 million years ago (some of the volcanoes didn't actually exist then, but hey...). And more auditing will get rid of these. Once they are all gone, you will be a 'perfect' human being with seemingly supernatural abilities... No one has ever demonstrated anything L Ron Hubbard claimed....
Scientologies story is long and complex, and shaded with secrecy, and I hope you realise it would be impossible to answer this question fully here.
Luckily people have devoted a lot of time to making information available on the web, You can follow the links for more information including evidence.
This is the main critical site of scientology which has evidence of all I have said; http://www.clambake.org
Here are books on the subject, mainly by ex-members...

Here are some videos you can watch of scientologists in action:
http://www.xenutv.com
Here is what wikipedia thinks of it all.

Here for comparison is the church's offical site

Ohh and there are most certainly not 8 million adherents, that again is a lie by the church. There are approx. between 100,000 & 500,000 worldwide, as countries censuses tell us. US for example in 2001 only had 55,000 - this is fact.
I suggest you read the websites, and stay well well clear of any org...

Scientology is a religion - It is based on the book by acclaimed writer/philosopher/scientist Lafayette Ronald Hubbard. Basically Scientology is an Applied Philosophy meaning that the tech is able to be applied to your day to day life to improve communicative skills, management skills etc.
There are approximatly 8,000,000 Scientologists around the world, each with their own success story.
I suggest you drop into your local org. and just have a chat to them.
Good luck.

it's about doing what you want, when you and looking to yourself for the answers to whatever questions may come up. They teach you how to identify the problems in your life and how to deal with them on your own. They try and sell you a bunch of stuff that you don't need and when you try to rebel, you are denying who you are.
