If a file has an unknown file extension, then by definition it is not an mp3. Different file extensions on sound files run on different programs, so you need to either find out which program runs the type of file you've found, or just find the song (or whatever it is) in mp3 format.

What is the file extension? If it is OGG or some other esoteric form of compression there are programs that will convert it to mp3. db Poweramp Converter for example.
