I have a 2 year old Beagle who is on the whole good on the lead, but when ever we take her in to town if we pass a butcher shop she cowers, pulls away, her tail is tight in under her and yeterday slipped her harness trying to get away. I would of thought most dogs would be trying to get in not get away. On our way in to town we had to pass 4 butchers and in the end it was easier to pick her up and carry her past them than trying to make her walk past.
Does anyone have any ideas as to why she does this?
Do you think she could be finding all the smells too much to cope with maybe?
Any ideas would be a help. Thanks.

Perhaps she is afraid of the smell of blood or she may of had a negative experience around something that had died. Beagles have a fabolous sense of smell and are often used by customs officers and search teams. Maybe the smells are too overwhelming for her.

I wonder where you got her? My guess is that something traumatic happened to her before you owned her and she was either near a butcher shop or someplace that smelled like one when it happened to her. I would simply try to keep her attention on you whenever you pass a shop and don't act like you expect her to be afraid when you pass one. Give her treats and speak in an excited voice all the while then walk by the shop and continue your excited banter. It may take a few tries but she will soon learn that there's nothing to worry about.

I think your Beagle just smells the blood and believes that could be her there. (Dogs have a very sensitive sence of smeel and hearing so maybe he hears the knife slashing...)

I suggest holding him or her when you walk by a butcher shop, or maybe just cross the street before. You could be really scaring her or him by passes the butcher shop.

Good Luck :)

Maybe your dog a had a traumatic experience, take her to an animal doctor and they'll more than likely be able to tell you what's wrong with your dog.

if by a "butcher shop" you mean an do their own processing of meant. then you smell would be offensive to your dog.

did you get her from the pound or human society? because if you did, she might have had a bad experience as a puppy, like getting hurt, or sumthing tragic happening there.
