For me, it's all related to melatonin levels, which depend on tryptophan. What's available here is different from what's available in the U.S., so don't get fussed if someone from over there sends you on a goose chase. :-) 5 HTP (hydroxytryptophan) is a precursor that is available. Holland & Barrett's is the one that works best for me, the brands my preferred store carries both have valerian, which I don't always get on well with. Tryptophan is in several foods, including peanut butter. When I'm badly in need, a peanut butter sandwich can make a nap unavoidable. So my suggestion is to have a PB sandwich about an hour before you want to sleep. If that works, try a supplement. The supplements should be taken with a 'carbohydrate snack' but not protein. The cool thing about this is it's actually addressing the cause of some insomnia. And turn off visual stimulators like the television and computer at least an hour before-hand to. Once you get your body acclimated to falling asleep earlier, you'll be better able to manage, but until then the rapid neural firing is just one more thing keeping you awake.

Before you go to bed, like about 30 minutes before, eat a small snack. I suggest 1-2 oz of turkey (triptophan - spelling approximate), a cracker or a cookie, or if you are concerned about your weight - a low glycemic carbohydrate and some nuts - almonds or peanuts are best. This is a recipe for some slow burning energy that will help level your blood sugar out for the night.
If your insomnia is due to your brain seeking blood sugar, because it is getting low in the middle of the night, this recipe will help that.
If this works, and you should know it in about 3 days if it does it consistently, you may want to check out www.hufa.org for more info on low blood sugar, its causes and things you can do about it.

I suffered from this, and my doctor told me to drink a glass of warm milk, or read a book before bedtime. None of these worked for me, so I take a .25 mg xanax everyday about suppertime, then come bedtime I am falling asleep before I hit the hay.
This also helps with my general mood everyday too.

TRY THE FOLLOWING:
1. ABSOLUTELY NO CAFFIENE AT ALL (INCLUDES CHOCOLATE)
2. KEEP TO A ROUTINE, EAT AT THE SAME TIME, GO TO WORK OR SCHOOL AT THE SAME TIME.
3. BEGIN SOME NIGHT TIME RITUALS SUCH AS READING, A LONG BATH, SOME QUIET RELAXING MUSIC.
4. AVOID LATE NIGHT NEWS, VIOLENT TV OR MOVIES, ANY UPSETTING SCENARIOS.
REMEMBER, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO SOLVE ANY PROBLEMS BEFORE BEDTIME OR AS YOU TRY TO SLEEP.
IF THIS DOESN'T WORK AND YOU HAVE INSURANCE, ASK YOUR DOCTOR TO SCHEDULE A SLEEP STUDY FOR YOU TO SEE IF THERE IS AN UNDERLYING PROBLEM AND GO FROM THERE.
AMBIEN AND OTHER SLEEP AIDS ARE ONLY FOR SHORT TERM USE.............YOU WILL GET USED TO THEM AND THEY WILL STOP WORKING AFTER A PERIOD OF LONG TERM STEADY USE.

INstead of amedication, try colors in your bedroom Chromatherapy can be used to treat both emotional and physical sleep disturbances, and may involve exposure to colored lights, massages using color-saturated oils and salves, meditation and visualization of certain colors, or wearing certain colors of clothing.
EXplore an interesting area:
http://www.solveyourproblem.com/sleep-remedies/treating_sleep_disorder_chromatherapy.shtml
And if you really need a medication only try this:
Boil on slow fire a cup of milk mixed with 1 cup water, 1 tsp aswagandha powder (Witania somnifera) till only 1 cup remains, add a little crystal sugar and take before bedtime. milk contains Tryptophan, which is a precursor of serotonin (a neurotransmitter), melatonin (a neurohormone), and niacin.
Tryptophan, found as a component of dietary protein, is particularly
plentiful in chocolate, oats, bananas, dried dates, milk, yogurt,
cottage cheese, sesame, peanuts. meat, fish, turkey, and chicken.
Therefore, milk+dates is a tranquiliser. .To earlier discussed remedy you can add 4 dates also to enhance its tranquiliser property.
pl see:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ayurvedaonline/messages/6650
This author takes 4 date sin morning and finds himself drowsy at 11 am itself! just for 15 minutes of course.
Anyway, ayurvedic remedies need to be taken for a long time to kill the problem at its root. Here root of the problem may be in your social, family atmosphere, which you only can correct.

You need to work out. If I had you on the gym floor, I would have your a** screaming for a break. You would sleep like a log. A big dead rotten one. You could throw your Ambien away.
