First of all Mexico would be whining and complaining because we had to go down there and straighten things up again. And as for the immigration issues, we'd still have them from someone, whining and complaining because of how strict OUR country's laws are for entry.

Considering the corruption that we have within our own government - what makes any think that we could stop it in another?
But in a perfect world - would be a wonderful plan because it would put a stop to illegal immigration from that country at least.

I think any way you look at it, just expect Mexico to keep trying to game the United States into footing the bill for em. I think building the border fence/wall/thing is a really good step, it creates a tangible border demarcation that will help that country to recognize when they're trespassing into ours. They can do all these things for themselves, 6 month's worth of the profits from their oil sales could have built a school in each and every town in Mexico by now. But no, but no, it's always just one more fan dance, another way to try and game/screw the United States out of 10 more dollars, the same basic practice you find in most of your better 3rd world countries. Maybe when Mexico finally gets some class and gets off their butts and does something about the fate of their OWN poor, there'll be less people trying to wheedle the United States into doing it FOR them. AS with children, the best way for em to learn independence is to DO it for themselves, with what they have, and what they have is adequate to the task, for starters. Commerce and investment in Mexico should be results-oriented, no tikee, no washee, and if they don't work a lot harder as citizens, as a government, as a COUNTRY to nail down the corners on their problems instead of letting them just metastasize into the United States, where it then has a detrimental effect on OUR communities and economy, then isolation is the best cure for the 'patient' . It may be the best answer regardless of what Bush and the rest of the pro-NAFTA-ies have to say about it, as we have our own social ills that need to be addressed absent foreign inflammatory factors. Mexico's a haven for drug dealers, so apparently is Canada, drug use is a big problem in america, keeping commerce with Mexico throttled back to a significant extent might help flush some of these guys out. One can only hope, but american communities need to get in on the program, too, and participate in things like Neighborhood Watch, or use their community hotlines to really get goings-on in our communities on paper and IN the papers, so that there's no mistaking the mainstream american mindset on letting mexican(and other) criminals run rampant on our streets.
California's jails and prisons are filled to overflowing, they're at the point where they're going to have to build more, and that'll come out of our wallets, too, because California gets money from the federal government for all of that. Helping other people is all good and fine, but if you're driving yourself into debt to do it, it's foolishness. Time for it to stop, and for countries like Mexico to work a LOT harder on their own internal reforms before they ever even THINK about asking us for help. Let's see solid evidence in black-and-white that they're getting a handle on a lot of this before we start throwing good money after bad. AND: to whatever extent Mexico's got proxies/agents/whathaveyou in our political system, it's time for some recall elections....they need to get their act together, and stop being a significant burden on the united states. Period.
