I remember as a kid, many years ago, lookin at the faces of people in my catholic church and they all looked like they rather be cuttin their arms off with a saw. If you are in the house of your all-loving god, shouldnt you have a huge smile on your face? It looks like 'Night of the Living Dead' I never felt so depressed in my life then when i was in church. If you feel so strong about something shouldnt you be able to show some emotion or is the brainwashing that deep?

I am totally amused by your statement. Not offended but totally amused. I hate going to Catholic church for that reason. It is way too serious for something that is suppose to be wonderful and fulfilling. This is why the church is going downhill rapidly and the catholic schools are closing and consolidating in my area. If the military had a religion, this would have to be it.
I have been to several churches that pretty much require the removal of the stick up the butt before entering and I have enjoyed the mass and being surrounded by happy people. The Catholic mass can always be compared to a weekly funeral but less exciting.

Oh yeah, in the church my mom went to when I was a kid the people either looked like zombies, hungover, or just didn't want to be there. Part of the problem too was that if the collection plate when around and the minister thought it wasn't enough he sent it around again, and that was after the "we're having a fundraiser" speech, but still, people should feel better going to church not worse. I think a service in the middle of Sunday afternoon would work better too.

Church should be a time for God and yourself to bond and bring happiness to each other. How other people feel about being there shouldn't affect your personal relationship with God. And to answer your question yes the drunkards, prostitutes, and addicts living on the street that have no relationship with the Lord look alot more miserable then Church going Christians.

I can't answer for your church, but if you look at the congregations that are growing these days they aren't the ones you describe. They are the churches with more upbeat music and messages, that involve the congregation more in the worship experience.

Unfortunately some of these same churches tend to water down their message so they can grow without offending anyone. (Who likes being told they are a sinner?)

So the trick (for me at least) is to find a bible-based church that sticks to the fundamental beliefs of the faith, but that invites the worshippers to join in praising God.

However, there are still a lot of people who think church SHOULD be as you describe, reverant to the point of being, well, I would call it dull, but that's just me. I try to honor their preference, but not attend their worship service. Fortunately my church offers both a contemporary and a tradional service, striving to meet the needs of many worshippers.

The house of God is a house of prayer and worship, not Disneyland.

Would you be willing to take Jesus' place on the cross? And if so, do you think you would be smiling?

At the Mass, when the Eucharist gets consecrated, we are mystically transported to the foot of the cross where Jesus was when He gave up His life for us at Calvary. But in the Eucharist we also have the glory of the risen Lord.

Try reading the chapter 6 of the gospel of John and some books by Dr. Scott Hahn to understand the Mass. I recommend, "The Lamb's Supper".

I haven't been to church in about seven years, but I remember the same thing. I have only really been to Catholic churches so I don't know for sure, but I would guess that well over half the people at church don't really want to be there.

Guess what, people! You don't have to be there. Odds are, you were probably born into your Christianity and never bothered to realize that you don't have to be that religion, or any religion at all.

Holy Moly was that funny, I laughing so hard I'm crying here for goodness sakes. You just described my parish down to the nails. I've been to other churches that aren't as morbid as my own St. Bleeding Heart of Eternal Suffering and they seem a little more into it. My personal favorite these days for a church affair is a visit to our snake handler church, most inspiring; well fascinating anyway. Great question, thank you for the laugh.

You need to go to a different church! I grew up in a predominately Catholic area and I know what you mean. But, the church I go to (Calvary Chapel) isn't like that. People love going there. They smile, get involved and actually ENJOY it. You can see it on their faces.

There are many churches where it is true that the members would rather be swimming with the sharks, however, there are churches where the members are truly happy to be there. You just need to look around and find the one that's right for you
