look at it this way, if you drive 1500 miles a month, then you are only spending $150 more a month for gas than a hybrid. since the hybrid actually costs more a month, costs more to repair, it is actually about the same price for a much faster vehicle with 4wd. I have a jeep and it costs me about $500 a month factoring in maintanence. my friend's hybrid costs that before any additional costs like tires and oil.
