Some people believe that religion, any religion, must exist in human society as an inevitable factor for the formation of communities. (No religion= No society or, inversely religion=society) And some people believe that religion is great thing to have in a society, but is not integral to the formation of a society. (No religion =? No society). What's your opinion?

Oh.. This is a very nice Question.
First Thing God is not man-made and hence Religion (serving God) is not a Concept or Sociology.
The Aim of Human Life is to Solve the problem of this material Life and go back to Kingdom of God.
But Man has his basic necessities of Eating, Sleeping, Mating and Defending that needs to be fulfilled too.
Hence It is Stated in Bhagavad Gita that God along with Religious Principles (How to engage in service of God) also gave the duties of Human according to his Mentality and Capacity. Hence God himself Created Society (Varnasrama), so that people learn to Leave together. Helping each other they get their necessities Satisfied. And Serving God, they connect with him and at the end of their Life they happily Go back to Kingdom of God.
Society is mainly Based on Culture. And Culture without Religion becomes Just a Fashion Statement.
If people are satisfied in the society they easily take up service to God. We get so many atheist now a days, as people are very less satisfied in Society. So Culture forms a very Good basis for Steady progress in Religion.
And the Highest Religion being Attainment of unmotivated Love of God. Both Religion and Society are very closely interdependent.

It's not really necessary, but it does create a cultural unity.

Americans believe in a generic god. He's universal and unique to each individual worshipper.

If religion didn't exist, we'd create myths, stories, and parables to meet our societies needs. Take the Star Wars movies as an example. They tell us a story about good and evil and never mention God.

They're not true in a literal sense, but they have truth in a metaphorical sense.

All cultures would invent such things. Storytelling makes it easier to understand complex situations in life.

That's why we have religion.

At present, the old Stone Age concept of the Bible is being replaced by a newer more contemporary belief in the Bible. Think of it like Jesus 2.0.

That being said, there are people who still believe in the Stone Age religious teachings. They are the most militant and hard headed. They're the ones most likely to fly planes into towers or bomb abortion clinics.

They need a serious upgrade.

Well, I have heard from multiple sources (media -- CNN or Yahoo News, probably) that have found that church-going theists are more happy in general about life than one with a weak-founded religion or one without. Religion is an essential to many people in society (though apparently not all, since many are atheists) because it gives a sense of purpose, serves as a source of comfort (something to fall back on in times of struggle), instructs people in the way of morals (and *keeps* a society moral, in my opinion -- without religions, after a while, many laws would crumble away), and fills people with so much hope -- the belief in the ultimate reward for their life on this earth.

I would say yes, but we cant have it interfere with the belief of others which can be chaotic. But we've got to share ideas n come up with solutions rather than problems. A society that is governed by God fearing people will strive in a positive direction with God being the FIGURE HEAD. Ungodly societys suffer from turmoil, chaos, strife, unsettled disputes, hate malice, transgreession........ a GODLY society is the BEST.

maybe 5000 years ago religion was necessary to control people (i agree with marx's opiate of the masses thing) but now it is certainly not necessary and i dont see why some people still cling on to faith.
i actually believe that if we got rid of all religion the world would be a much better place. because as long as there is religion, there will be crazy people that can stir religious people up and cause them to attack other people. religion is the cause of most of the worlds problems right now.

firstly, it's not religion that is necessary in society, but faith.. faith in a higher power that gave "birth" to all of us and that watches us from Heaven... God.
There may have been communities (like antique communities) that didn't believe in anything as a higher power, but history forgot them because they were not togged together in one belief .
That's why society needs a religion.. to have people that believe in one thing ( God ) and that would remain together no matter what...

Religion is the most important. Without it you are not living your life as you should be. Society comes after it always. Religion does not depend on anything except its creator, while society will destroy itself without religion.

If that's what gets them through this crazy life we led then more power to them. If a person doesn't need religion then by all means don't practice any. The wonderful thing about living in this country and what this country was founded on is FREEDOM. To worship or not worship as we please. We should all respect that choice.

I guess because it's human nature [for most of us] to believe in some higher power. As in - who really created the beauty of the earth if not God? And do we believe in life after death - or not? I believe in the spirituality and peace that Christianity [or some form of religion] brings to most of humanity. It puts a balance in our lives.

Why not?
Every different community has different kitchen's ghost stories.
It makes the world colourful and lively with the playing of pots and pans during the cultural celebration on planet earth.
Without it planet earth will be a dull place to live in.
