the IRA is the Irish republican army , was set up to try and get the British invaders to leave Ireland they carried out a series of bombings and guerrilla attacks against British military and government offices and also unfortunately civilians as well,
there most famous group were the 12 apostles , which were basically 12 assassins that went around Dublin and Ireland executing any British officers they could find it eventually caused the British to leave Ireland but they kept control of the north of Ireland in 6 counties where the most protestants and British people lived, it then continued its war until recently attacking British guard posts , shooting down British helicopters with stinger missiles , sniper attacks with Barrett light 50 sniper rifles , in attempt to reunify the island of Ireland, but they have recently signed a peace agreement where they have agreed to hand over all the weapons the have,

The IRA, the Irish Republican Army, were a terrorist faction *funded by Americans, bloody hypocrites*. In the late 90's, the IRA was disbanded due to the signing of the Good Friday agreement
Basically, the IRA want a unified Ireland. The Loyalists want Ulster to remain British. The IRA and Unionists have been at each others throats for hundreds of years, cumulating in the Civil war in the 80's. The good friday agreement called for a universal disarmament, which the IRA did. the ycease to exists as a paramilitary organisation. The 'Real' IRA are a new splinetr group, who still commit robberiers and protection rackets

Don't they teach kids in school anything? Millions in education and they still are clueless.....
The IRA is a terrorist outfit that dates back to 1916 in Ireland. It's primary goal was independence of Ireland from the Uk through violence and politcal organizing. When Ireland brokered a independence deal, 6 counties in the North remained under UK control. ThIs Pro Catholic group resented the Church of England and it's folowers loyality to the Crown. Thus began a civil war that has gone on for years. There are God knows how many books, films, papers and net sites on the subject........
But my tax dollars seem to have been wasted yet again...

Essentially it's about a united ireland. The republic of Ireland came in to existence after a war of independence with Britain, but was partitioned from northern Ireland. Part of the population (unionists), in northern Ireland consider themselves British their ancestors were settled on confiscated lands in the C17th, another part (nationalists)consider themselves Irish. the nationlists don't want to be ruled by London, and the unionists don't want to be ruled by Dublin.
It isn't about the British wanting to hold on to NI, Britain (England Scotland and Wales) know little about it and would probably prefer to be rid of it. Equally you can't just move people because you dispute their claim- look at Palestine (the idea that, ah well, they're all arabs let them move)
For the nationalists it's about centuries past of oppression of culture, language and religion - read up on the penal laws prohibitions on these - culminating in the great famine of the 1840's - a million died of starvation, millions emmigrated in the space of about five years
Do a google search on the famine, 1916 rising, 1921 war of Independence, 1922 civil war
