Male dogs may be neutered at any age, but earlier is better if you don't want your dog to go after every female in heat. The usual age for pups is 6 months, btw. It does NOT hurt the dog...he's anethsetized for the operation. A vet can explain the actual process better than I can, if you are that interested in it. The advantages are: your dog will not sire puppies. There are millions of unwanted, puppies born every year because people don't neuter or spay their dogs. The puppies end up abandoned, abused, lost, starving and dead. The very lucky ones get found by the Humane Society and various dog rescue associations and find homes. Don't add to this problem by being irresponsible and leaving your dog intact. If you are NOT showing or breeding pure-bred dogs as a professional business, GET YOUR DOGS NEUTERED OR SPAYED, PLEASE!!!!!!

The sooner the better! Dogs can be neutered as early as 2 months - but is usually performed at 6 mo. of age.
It will be like any surgery and probably hurt a little - but the whole time the neuter is going on the dog will be asleep under anaesthtics. Basically the vet will remove the testicles through a small inscision in the scrotum. He also ties off the blood vessels in the area. Your dog will be fine usually within a few days - just be sure to watch for large swelling lasting more than 3 days, and any pus. Good luck

My vet will do it once the he is 6 months old. I had planned on breeding my 2nd Pitbull but he had an anerysm at 11 months old and had to have emergency surgery to correct it. Due to not knowing why he had the anerysm (on the right jugular) the vet recommended that we have him neutered once he heals from the surgery. At 14 months we had him neutered. He's fine and adjusting well. I haven't noticed much of a difference with his personality. He is still as hyper and playful as he always was. My understanding from the specialist is that this procedure can be done at any age after 6 months. They are sore for a few days and the vet will tell you to keep them calm for a few weeks but I wasn't able to keep him calm for more then a few hours at a time. (I have 3 dogs that are very playful) Af far as disadvantages the only one is if you plan on breeding the dog. Otherwise it's the best thing to do.

Any age is okay after six months. The advantages are big. He's less likely to get in dogfights or run away after a good smell. Dog theives tend to stay away from neutered animals. He won't anger the neighbors by messing around with their females. He won't try to love your leg. There's more but you get the idea.

The vets do everything under anethesia and it heals quickly. Basically they remove the testes. Dogs don't have the emotional problem of this as far as I've seen. There are even falsies the vet can put in their place but I've only read about them, it's for looks and the dogs don't care about that. Afterward some dogs can gain weight but if you limit the goodies, he should be fine.

Unless you are a breeder (and a responsible one) or show dogs there are very few good reasons for your average pet owner to keep the animal intact. Between 1 and 2 years should fine to get your dog neutered.

It's a surgical procedure and as with any surgury there is a risk. In males the testicles are removed.

The advantages are a lower risk of cancer and other diseases. In males they may be less likely to roam or get into fights. The urge to reproduce is gone and so are the problems that occur with that urge.

The disadvanges that I can think of is you can't breed your dog which you shouldn't be doing any ways unless you can improve the breed. And you can't show you dog in AKC conformation.

Talking to your vet would be a good idea.

Usually around 6 months of age is the ideal time but they can be neutered at any age as long as they are healthy enough to go under anesthesia. No disadvantages. Advantages are, most importantly less chance of testicular cancer, no unwanted pups, less chance of humping (although some still will for a period of time), less "marking" of territory, lesser chance of agression..etc.. Thet don't feel a thing because they are under anesthesia-it is a quick and simple procedure and very minimal and short-lived discomfort after the procedure. He'll be back to himself in no time.

The dog can be neutered at any age after 6 months. Ask the veterinarian how s/he does it. It can be done painlessly, but the dog will feel sore for a while. You won't see much difference in the dog, other than the absence of testicles.

We neuter them where I work as young as 3 months...Some shelters do it younger! The advantages of early neuter in Males is they have a much lower risk for Testicular cancer andwont learn to lift their legs or Mark everything..

A female Dog who is spayed before her first heat has almost a 0% chance of getting breast cancer(My dog of course was an exception) and No chance of getting Cancer in her Female organs because they are GONE

Spaying and Neutering doesnt change your dog..It does keep them from roaming..make them less aggressive and more easy to train. They can be nuetered at any age under 2 is fine

I think they can be neutered less than a year. Your vet will know the best time. It's important to do, we found out, when we procrastinated on our dog. She went into "false pregnancy", where she thought she was pregnant, even started lactating, and carried a toy around with her like it was a puppy. We just thought she was being weird until we took her to the vet and found out what was going on! We had her fixed, with no problems, although you do have to watch them for more weight gain after doing it.
