Especially in the northwest?
No. The Northwest is especially short of gasoline because it has to get sent from the Southeast, where the refineries are. There are no refineries in the Northwest.
There are no refineries in Hawaii, either. And the few refineries in California are not able to keep up with the demand.
No, we don't have gas in more states than we are currently using. That's the problem.

Conditions following World War II were set up so that Japan and Germany are required to get their oil from the United States. This country currently exports as much or more oil than we import. The gas situation is nothing more than gouging. Ask yourself these questions..
1. If, as they say, there is no profit in gasoline sales, why are new stations cropping up like weeds in a vacant lot. Would you risk the $200,000 dollars building a gas station that makes no money?
2. Again, if there is no profit in gasoline sales, and, as is claimed by every Convenience store/Gasoline station owner in the country, they only make money on the chips and cola they sell inside the store, why would they give their customers the opportunity not to enter the store to buy the stuff they make money on by installing pay at the pump?
3. Why do you suppose every station on every corner, whether they are busy or not, whether their fuel comes from Texaco or BP, or Phillips 66, or Sinclair, whether they are downtown or in the suburbs, changes their price at the same time? That smells like price fixing to me. Maybe ask your state Attorney General.
4. I have tracked holidays for the past six months and prices at the pump jump just prior to a holiday or holiday weekend, just recently, 14 cents a gallon just before the Fourth of July weekend. That's just good business....hooray for Capialism...ha ha.
You are being scammed. We only import oil so we can claim a national interest in the Middle East and maybe own a country over there one day. Can you say "permanent military bases in Iraq'. Keep your head up, the truth will out.

the answer is nit in drilling more and ruining the alaskan or oregon or washington state wilderness it is in new fuel tech. at the turn of the last century there was ahuge problem in cities such as chicago and new york. they couldnt figure out what to do about transportation polution. there was horse crap everywhere. they never did solve the problem of what do with all the hose manure, the new automible simple made the question moot. the same thing will happen with gasoline. i think the republican party actuall saved all the horse crap from the 19th century to make their party platform

Are you asking if there isn't raw oil that we are not tapping into? Yes. Lots. ANWR for example, could very well provide us with enough oil to seriously decrease our dependence on the M.E. Decreasing our dependence on the middle east would take away alot of their bite, as well. The money we save by drilling for our own oil (and if we could persuade the leftist tree huggers to let us build a few more refineries, too) could be used to help us explore alternative fuels. The coast of Florida is also a good place to drill, but we aren't allowed to drill there.
As far as actual refined fuel, I don't know.
