end the party? The little girl was 7 or 8 years old and was a guest. She had bent over to pet the dog, and it jumped up and bit her. There was screaming, some bleeding, and much chaos. The younger kids (2, 3, and 4 years old) didn't seem to understand what was going on. Her parents took her to the doctor right away. After the biting, the hosts secured the dogs in its enclosure. Turns out, the dog had bitten an adult in the past.

PS I did my part by keeping the upset parents (hosts) away from the kids. I didn't want the little kids to get scared. Another parent got the party rolling again with the opening of presents. Cake had not been served. No games had been played.

What would you have done?

I kept the upset hostess from the kids because she was reliving her own very traumatic dogbite experience as a child. I don't think that would have helped her child or the other kids. There were other responsible adults on scene (like my husband and some other parents) who could talk to the kids. The host husband was busy checking on the child who had been bitten.

songbird1331-The host mom wasn't trying to get to her child. She was very upset while all the little kids happened to be around her. Preschoolers are sponges. I pictured a group of little crying kids if she stayed where she was. I took her inside away from the little kids (including her daughter). Not once did she say, "I'm worried that my daughter *** might be scared. I need to be with her."

victim_of_fun00-These are not close friends of ours. My son likes the daughter (the birthday girl), though we don't see them often (more like acquaintances).

It sounds like the adults did all they could, except for one thing: WHAT THE HELL WAS THE DOG DOING AT THE PARTY FOR KIDS IF IT HAD A KNOWN HISTORY OF AGGRESSION???????If I was the child's parents, I definitely would be looking into this matter further.

Yes, most definitely the party should have ended. All the parents should have been notified that there was an accident and a girl was bit by the dog. The parents have the right to know that this dog is aggressive, they "SHOULD" want to keep their children away from the dog. Some things are more important than a birthday party, like a child's health and well being. It is clear that the host had poor judgment about the dog around the children, what other dangers await the children should the party continue.

Well, all dogs have a good home somewhere, but this dog may not be for you if you have children. I don't suggest putting the dog to sleep, but it should not have been in a child's birthday party if it had a history of agression. You should put the dog up for adoption, and make sure that possible adopters know the situation, and that the dog is not good around children, other dogs, or cats, and isn't good with people in his face. Other than that, you handled it well. The dog was put in an enclosure, that was good. You probably should have played games and eaten cake, because the kids were probably a bit frightened. I once had a friend who had to put a dog to sleep because it bit her on the nose. The dog had never been agressive before. They tried to put it up for adoption, but no one wanted a doberman who bit a girl on the nose. All I can say is, that dog shouldn't be out of its cage in social events such as that one. Good luck!

Probably the same but I would NOT keep the parents away from the kids. What if you were one of the upset parents? You would want to be with your kid especially in that situation. I would not end the party because everyone would know how embarrassed I was. I would just move along with the gifts like you did. I would also call the little girl's parents to see if she was ok.

the same as described. if the owners knew that the dog had a tendancy to bite, they should have kept it well away from the kids anyway... but as they didnt, it sounds to be like things were controlled rationally, and the best was dont to not upset the kids.
it would be best to get on with the pasrty, as long as the girl was ok, and for the remainder of it to keep the dog locked out of the way. theres no point destroying a whole party and breaking another childs heart just beause of an accident....

I'd have probably done the same thing- Just because a child gets bit, granted by the hosts dog, the Birthday child is still having a birthday! All you can do is get the parents on the scene, apologize, and hope not to get sued!!

It was good to protect the other kids from being scared. To end the party probably wouldn't have been good for the kids. But by not ending it, I think it would have offended the childs' parents. During that horrible experience for their child, they might wonder why everyone can have a good time afterward. But you can't please everyone. I can't believe these people let their dog around kids knowing that it bites. I was bitten in the face by a dog when I was 6 and had to have stitches. That dog should be put down imediately. I would be so furious if my child was bitten by a stupid dog. It can traumatize a person for life. Those dog owners are selfish and ignorant. They owe that little girl by putting it down and giving her a huge apology.
