We are about to bring home a little baby Dachshund and are wondering if we should litter train him or always take him outside. We would like to litter train him, but are worried about what will happen when we take him to another house for the day and we need to take him outdoors. Can you do both or will this confuse the dog?

I think litter training is a nice idea but feel that taking the dog outside is the best idea. that way both owner and pet get the needed exercise. Doing both would definetly be very confusing to the puppy. First you tell the puppy to go outside then tell himm no inside but do it here.

well i have a dachound and hes litter trained but he also goes out side. Litter training is really is the best thing if u live in a city where it would be hard to take them out ever 5 min.s!

with my puppy, i started off with these pads that are made for dogs. you have to put the puppy on the pad and let him get scent of it. do that a couple times, then he will actually go on it. Then i moved the pad closer to the door everyday, and he got used to going on to the door when he needed to use the bathroom, then he would smell the pad and go. Then i took away the pad, and now he goes and stands next to the door. and since he cant smell the pad, he kinda just stands there. thats how i know he needs to go. then i take him outside and he finds a spot to go out there. it worked perfect for me. i took him over my sisters house once, and he actually ran to the door when he had to go...so maybe the house doesnt matter anymore

btw...i have a miniature doberman pinscer

right now im wee wee pad training my dog and i HATE it! and once yyou start u cant turn back- housebreak her-itll be easer for you(and the dog) if ur dog insist on going in the house- crate train her- this is when u keep her in the crate and feed her in there unless u take her outside to go. its a lil sad at first but she'll get used to it- give her a kong toy to play w/!if she goes outside praise her(click) give a command first tho. then bring her inside and give her a toy to play w/(if u want) good luck!!

I had a rotweiler puppy, and we had him litter box trained. We put newspaper down, and they would go. But, at the same time, if we were home, we would take them outside. The dogs seeemed fine with it. Depending on if were awake/there depended on where they would go.

definitely do not do both. put paper down for him to go on. watch for signs that he needs to go. if you catch him in time let him go on the paper. after he goes, (#2) take the poop outside, along with the puppy and let him see where you put the poop. before long he will get the idea. you will also get better at telling when he needs to go so you can just grab him and take him outside. then you can skip the paper all together. before you know it he'll let you know he needs to go out
