I acually use both (don't add the salt until the water is boiling because the salt can make little pits on the bottom of your pot). The salt adds flavour to the pasta while the oil will keep the pasta from clinging together...

They do two different things, so both would be ok. It's not an "either-or" situation, like you make it sound.

The salt raises the boiling point of the water, causing it to grow hotter than it could otherwise, which probably cooks the pasta slightly more quickly than without salt.

A little bit of olive oil in the water will tend to keep the pasta from sticking together.

Both. The salt lowers the boiling point so you cook the pasta faster, while the oil keeps the pasta from sticking together.

Ypu need to use salt to flavor the pasta, or else it has a tendency to taste "flat". Keep the oil OUT of the boiling water. I know, I know, "it keeps the water from boiling over." Just try using a larger boiling pot, and only PARTIALLY cover the pot, so that the steam can escape, but water maintains temperature.

A dash of salt is always a good way to season the pasta. I just saw Rachel Ray do it this morning.
I always add a few drops of olive oil to keep the pasta from sticking.

Both. The salt is to add flavour to the pasta, and the oil supposedly stops the pasta from sticking together while cooking.

Never use oil; use salt if you wish - depends on the recipe and what you are doing with the pasta.

the best way to make pasta is with just some salt in the water, that is the traditional method, but something different is add a cup to cup and half of white wine to your pasta it will flavor it, us a fruity dry wine, like chardonnay, or Gewurztraminer.

I dont use either one. They make boiling time slower. If you want to use one, make it salt. The oil is not good for you and the sauce doesnt stick.
