I am in AA, and basically people sometimes get caught up in WHAT they are feeling with out examing what the situation really is rationally, feelings aside. So, rather acting on what you are feeling someimtes poeple are told to take a step back, you know forest for the trees kind of thing...
I don't know that it's in the literature anywhere. Maybe in One Day At Time...

The phrase "Feelings are not facts" refers to the self created misery alcoholics often create through their self-centered fears and anxieties, which very often have NO RELATION to what is really happening. An alcoholic, by nature, is often unable to discern the truth from the false- "constitutionally incapable"- and a "feeling" is not something based on fact. A feeling, for me, is like an opinion, in that it CANNOT be proven. If I only did what I 'felt' like doing, I would stay in bed, drinking, until I died. For me, a moral sensitivity is doing the "next right thing" and emotional (over)sensitivity is what got me into AA to begin with. I couldn't deal with life on life's terms and drank to blot out the reality. I don't know that this phrase is anywhere in the literature, but you might want to talk to your sponsor about this.

I am not sure where it originated from- it could be an AA original. It is a true saying though- feelings aren't facts. This is a thing in life that many many ppl just can't get over. Why don't you ask this question at your next meeting- that's what you are there for, to receive support from your peers. They are going through what you are, and they can explain how this saying relates to your recovery. Think about how many times people do irrational things based on emotions, not truths. Good luck to you!

Feelings are emotions= energy in motion. There are no right or wrong feeling, they are a part of our humanness. AA is a wonderful program that can help anyone who is willing to listen. Do you have a sponsor? If not get one. Go to as many meetings as you can, especially the first 90 days. It is my belief that alcoholics are born with MORE sensitivity than non-alcoholics, your drug of choice when using, numbs your feelings.
