I don't believe it is a matter of religion but more of a societal/cultural issue. Inbreeding can cause many genetic medical conditions,retardation, and mental illnesses.

Marrying in the same family was a commonly accespted practice in the Old Testament. It was to keep the bloodline pure.

It is not forbidden in the bible but, sometimes when people marry close blood line there is a greater chance for the ofspring to have birth defects.
