The best thing to do is take him to the doctor, they can give him medication to dry it almost immediately! Especially with kids, a doctor is always the best choice. Otherwise there are a lot of products on the market that do work a little better than calamine lotion. I get it horribly and have found the one that works best for me is Caladryl, it is a clear gel and has a quick soothing effect, another good one is in a tube, called something like Ivy Dry. There are a lot of home remedies people told me to try which I got desperate enough to try on several occasions but none worked, like applying oatmeal; bleach water is supposed to dry it; baking soda paste, none of which provided any relief to me so I would stick with over the counter medications until I could take him to his doctor!

If its only getting worse and not getting better, you probably aren't gonna find any over the counter that is going to help. All people react to poison ivy differently, some people are more sensitive to the oil that cause the rash then other. I would recomment that you either go to his peditrician or family MD if you can wait or go the ER for Medicine. Benydryl might help with hte itching but more then likely he is going to need to go on a steriod dose pack to get rid of the inflamtory process.

Cook some oatmeal and put it on his poison ivy while warm. This will help with the itch. You can also let him soak in warm bath tub water with some baking soda sprinkled in it. Keep him out of the humid weather and especially the sun! No one can catch it from another person so that's good. I hope he feels better soon.

Be careful with the Calamine lotion. It can really burn. A cool soda bath helps a lot and cortizone cream. Scratching will spread the poison.

try a bath in alveno or oatmeal flakes. it has always helped me. There are also some new products out for poison ivy, they will help dry it up quickly. If it doesn't start drying up within a day or two, you should check with a doctor, as he may need a prescription medication to help.

I wouldn't worry about natural for this. 5% corticosteroid cream is needed to get this under control. Consider also rinsing the skin off with a cotton ball soaked with rubbing alchol to get the poison ivy oil off the skin.

get some aveeno oatmeal bath and have him soak in that ... it really helps the itching.
you might also try benadryl spray - it soothes itching on contact.
poor kid, it's hard to be inside during the summer ... get him a movie he likes and a popsicle too ... :) knowing his mom is taking care of him will help too!

I'm not sure I can actually recommend this, but my friend had poison ivy, and she blotted a tiny amount of bleach on it, and they dried out overnight. Please be very, very careful if you try this, and cut it with water or something.
