The ability of a material to withstand impact is referred to as its toughness (measured in ft-lb or J). Two tests commonly used are the Charpy or Izod tests. Both use a pendulum which starts at an initial height, swings through its arc and breaks the speciment under test, and reaches a final height. The delta in potential energy between the two heights represents toughness.
