An a la carte menu means that you choose which starter to go with your choice of main course and your choice of sweet, it's no different from a normal menu, and you get what the menu states, so steak may come with fries and side salad, or vegetables or whatever they list. The other type of menu is menu of the day, where you are given a limited choice, say two starters, two main meals and three sweets, they are usually at a fixed price. whereas the a la carte has separate prices.

a la carte is French for 'from the menu'
Many restaurants have a less expensive fixed price menu which has less choice. This is known as 'the set menu' , 'the table d'hote' or the ' menu fixe ' .The restaurants more expensive dishes are usually found on the a la carte menu. The term has come to be associated with 'fine dining' For example, a diner may only have one menu but it would not be called 'a la carte'

A la carte means that the item comes all by itself with nothing else. So for instance if you ordered steak a la carte you would just get steak. Versus if you ordered steak normally off a regular menu it might usually come with mashed potatoes and a vegetable.

An al a carte menu is a menu where you can choose what you want, as apposed to a prix de fixed which is a Set menu for a fixed price.
So basically any normal menu where you choose what you want is al a carte.

It's not different - it is actially just a normal menu, but French (or posh)
It means "at the map" literally - you order whatever you choose to from that menu, as opposed to a set menu.
Bon appetit!!!
