MP = Music Player...
It is 3 because it is the third revision of the protocol/specification.

MP2 still exists, and I've seen some older files that were created to that specification. However, as newer protocols replace older, obsolete ones, the older ones usually just die out and fade away into oblivion.

MP3 = MPEG Audio Stream, Layer III

MP1 and 2 do exist, but are very old extensions, MP3 format is probably a more secure and detailed version, and since it's Layer 3 that explains how you can filter out the lyrics in some songs (i neve tried it with a program but slightly removing the headset jack seems to mostly block out the singing and leave the "Background" music intact)

MPEG Audio Stream, Layer 3, refers to the audio decryption algorithm used by the MPEG-1 video decoding algorithm. The number is not a version it's simply a referance to where the audio stream exists within the MPEG codec. Simply put, the people at Fraunhofer created the algorithm for the MPEG codec and decided to release it stand-alone (as intellectual property)...Since Win32 requires extensions and that requirment used to be 3 characters, they wanted to base it's extension on it's ancestry. Well .mpg, .mp4 (the full MPEG4 video codec), etc were all taken so they just named it MP3.

MP stands for music player.And yes there were mp 1 and 2 used earlier.In mp3 certain portion of the music is cut off which r inaudible to the human ear i.e the portion having higher frequencies r choped off.Thus,the size of the song stored reduces.
