Hi all, I am a Christian & have a question for non-believers. I don't intend to sound insulting, rude etc. but its something I can't understand & if you can give me your view points on it as a non-believer I would appreciate it...Serious answers to. Ok...So if love and happiness is just electrical signals running through your brain, and thats all it is, then if you search deep within yourself, and look at who you are, what you are & what your worth, does life seem unsatisfying? I know some people will read this & think 'what ever'. But I also know a few will be sincere & search the very deepest possible within themselves & realise that 'somethings not right' if that's the way it all is. I know people like to come up with theories to justify it, but at the end of the day, if that is all life is, that you're just a brain in a body that will come and go, then can you deny that life is pointless?

life is very satisfying. and everything's right, lol.
my point in life is to be happy. to make that particular synapse in my brain work overtime. life is to be lived. think about it this way: if i'm here simply to wait to get into heaven, what's the point? what's the point of living? i might as well just die, if that's all i'm supposed to do here. that's how i see it. if my point in life is to make the most of the time i have on this planet, then i understand why i should be alive. otherwise, life doesn't make much sense, now does it?
i am an animal capable of intelligent thought. that's all i am. nature made me this way, and i'm grateful for that.

Okay, I'll try and answer this sincerely.
I think it's possible to not be a Christian and also believe that love and happiness are not just electrical signals.
I meditate and I honestly believe, through my experiences, that we are part of a bigger whole. I can feel that and when I do, I feel love and calm and reassurance. What I can't do is to give it a name and believe a bunch of stories in a book. Sorry, but I'm happy that way and still believe it is possible to be a good person without giving myself a title of Christian and believing in God. I don't think it's that simple.
What really upsets me (and I'm sorry to snap sometimes, it's easy to do that over the Internet) is that I feel patronised by a lot of Christians who think that I'm missing something or am unsatisfied or lost... I'm not of the pure scientific view, but some people are and maybe to them, life seems so much sweeter because it will end and after that there will be nothing.
I wonder sometimes if this is all just an endless battle between what people do and do not believe and in the end everybody thinks they're right and what does it really matter anyway? Just be sure that we have today and try and be nice!

Um... one little problem here. You are asking nonbelievers of the Christian faith. There are plenty of such people that believe in God and a soul and an afterlife and all that. They are called Jews, Muslims, Ba'hais, and so on.
So... are you addressing atheists, agnostics, and skeptics, then?
Life is not pointless, no matter whether you think we do or do not have a soul. I will still feel, I will still see and hear and touch and taste and smell and love even if I have no soul.
My purpose is to be happy. That's my entire purpose, but includes many other things. It includes making others happy, thinking, learning, and doing my best to make this world better.
To answer about the soul and love and happiness and all that...
Animals... Christians do not believe in animal souls. Animals love, hurt, become sad, excited, fearful, angry, and they even grieve.
How are they different, really? They are not self-aware, and they do not have the gift of spoken language as we do. Some have languages, but none so intricate as a human language.
So... if a human is not self aware, and cannot speak - say a person with brain damage - have they lost their soul? How is it *if the soul is not a product of the brain* that their brain being damaged affects who they are and how they act and what they feel? Very simple - because the brain is the origin of the "soul."

I suppose my life may be pointless yet given that we as a species are as common as grains of sand on the beach what could be the point to any life. I like stories just as much as the next mortal, it passes the time and amuses; the story doesn't become the purpose of my being though. I resolved myself to accept that the only thing real is God, all else is an extension of the One; so it follows to my thinking that the only true reason for my existence is the worship of God. The control over my being in existence wasn't mine, I just am; therefore it follows that what ever I do is for the amusement of God on levels that I can not understand; so I don't bother trying to interpret God's will; I just go with what feels right. I think it is simple, it is in us; do unto others as you would be treated yourself. That's it. There is no need for a catalysis such as Christianity to seal the deal for me, I'm there now. I think one thing you may find amusing yourself, I think God enjoys us dancing; so when ever I get a chance I dance. Is it possible that dancing is the point to my life? Life is pointless for some folk I guess, yet I'm enjoying it so much and when it is striped down to it's core as you've suggested I don't find it empty at all; I find it joyous and wonderful; as perhaps God would have it be for us all. Thanks for this question/comment, I do not believe I'd have considered this with out it.

right now i beleive life is pointless, i mean pointless depends on your own view point. if you think amassing wealth and material pleasures is the point of your life , just a brain and body is enough. if you want heaven, i think nowadays money can but you heaven. but if you want peace , u can go nowhere, u can only find it in yourself. i think people become atheists because they cant justify all the wrong things they do, so to find peace within themselves they beleive that there is no god.
the thing with all the beleivers is that, no matter how advanced we are , we all are emotional people , we need someone to love are care 4 us, to be a part of A community. when we dont get all the love and attention we want, we turn to god. an unreal abtsract thing to give us love.so its not a pointless existence.
so basically it all comes down to love. if there is love all around you, you dont need any one else, the world will be full of atheists, because the god that u are searching 4 is within u, that is love is within you.
i hope i wasnt too confusing:)
but some people have the will to face the world on their own, they cannot beeive stories and assumptions,so they beleive in the logically correct thing that is, there is no god

My dear, you seem to be laboring under the impression that there are two choices: Christianity or atheism. Such is not the case. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of different religious beliefs in this world. And while it may be hard for you to comprehend, many of us get at least as much value out of what we believe as you do from your beliefs. Why should you be so sure that "something is not right" within me just because it is not the same as what is within you.
I am equally confused about how someone can believe in what I understand Christianity to be, but I admit that I probably have a limited idea of what Christianity really is. Things like worshiping a god that is prepared to fry people forever for not buying his particular brand of . . . ahem, I get carried away. But you see the point, I hope?
P.S. Your additional comment makes no sense at all. Why am I not surprised?

Read "The God Part of the Brain" by Matthew Alper and Why God Won't Go Away" by Andrew Newberg. They are available for sale on the Net. Nah, you are not insulting. It is true that love and peace and all the emotions that we experince ARE electrical signals in our brain. Science does not know exactly how it all works, but one they it sure will. It took science thousands of years to learn how the heart and other organs work. The brain is the most complex organ, think of that. Life is not pointless. You have ONE SHOT at it, so BE THE BEST AND GOODEST YOU CAN BE. To live in the memories of those who love you is to never die.

I don't find life pointless there lots of things I wanna do, learn stuff, experience things, try new things, see what happens in the future etc. So even if are just a brain in a body I don't think life is pointless if we only live once try and make it a good one. I don't feel unsatisfied to with religion. I'm an agnostic I'm not not sure f God exists or not. I think we really dunno what is out there or what happens to us when we die. I don't believe in the Christian religion coz it doesn't make sense to me.

If you don't want to sound insulting, then don't write insulting questions!
You may be so closed in your little Christian world, but I hear there are actually *other* religions in the world these day. In fact, rumor has it some of them have actually been around *longer* than Christianity, and one of them actually is an *ancestor* of Christianity.
Maybe instead of asking stupid questions, you should go read your Bible--the *whole* Bible. Then open your eyes for a week or two and see if maybe some of those other religions have actually found their way into your world...

Life is basically pointless, all creatures are born because of the selfish gene's wish to reproduce itself. Humans have no more right to be here than cockroaches and will almost certainly be outlived by them.
However we have our brains and should therefore live our lives to serve others as taught by Jesus and by the wise men of most religions. Whether we have the faith to believe a chosen religion doesn't determine how good someone is, it is your actions that matter.
Religion is a source of good teaching but it is also the source of many disagreements including war. My philisophy is don't pray for peace, act for peace.

See that is where you are wrong. You classify all non christians as non-believers. That is where you offend others. Religion is a cultural phenomenon and people use different ways to find peace and happiness in life. Why is that? is love only christian love and electrical signals for everyone else who is non-christian. Go seek deeper meanings of peace instead of reciting christian this and christian that!
