People have their own daily struggles and its hard to just get through the day - let alone deal with the issues of the community. Also, people are not appreciated when they do participate, because it is often implied that what they offer is not enough or not good enough. It is easier not to get involved than being a target for criticism from those who are and those who are not - collectively!

I wish it was different though, because for all the reasons NOT to get involved, there are twice as many in favour of involvement. But in the minds of those who have decided to stay distant, there will never be enough good reasons: Their EXPERIENCES and PERCEPTION in terms of community service or involvement both need to be changed over time. This can only happen through positive reinforcement and voices from those who are involved.

I have personally had this experience. I was a member of a Lions Club. I loved doing community service so I joined this club. It was all good for a while and then it got an element into it. There was a couple who overtook everything and one guy that worked his way to the top and stepping over everyone.

I guess it can be the people that you are working with if it's a club. It can be the fact that a person dones't have community spirit. It can be that they don't have a lot of money. It can be that they are lazy.

Volunteering and then being criticised..
Volunteer means of your free will,
not being pressured into something by other do gooder nosey martyrs who derive their self confidence in forgetting their families and serving the community above and beyond the call of duty...
To the lovely people out there in the communities that help genuinely and don't put others down for what they contribute, or don't wish to be involved with, good on you.. I and others have a lot of respect for you.
For the people who just want to bittch and big-note themselves about what other people are, or are not doing, I have no respect for what so ever and will go to any lengths to avoid them..

People are ignorant of the blessings they are misssing when they help others. The more we pread the word and get others involved, the more volunteering will take place in our communities. Some times people just do not know how to get involved or that they should.

You can never make people participate in community work unless they really do have the time, the commitment and energy to do so.
I have found that for the majority it is a lack of knowing who to approach and where.
Some people are so wrapped up in their own lives they just don't care enough about others to spare an hour a month!

they are selfish. when i say that, i don't necessarily mean it in a derogatory or insulting way. rather, they look out for themselves, their families, and matters that relate directly to their welfare. they pledge no allegiance to other things, so they have no real reason to be altruistic. indeed, some fear that they would not be liked in their social circles or what not if they do not at least seem altruistic and in love with the community, so they may donate some money superficially to poor people who they could just as easily laugh at. in reality, however, they do not care about the community in general. even many people who do community service projects are doing it for selfish gain, whether it be to get a scholarship or to fulfill a court's requirement. their method of living is inherently wrong but naturally justified. the hero strikes again!

Time. I would love to work more with my town. But i had to move to 3rd shift just so i could make enough money to support my family. So my kids can live in a safe town and go to a good school. Between work, housework, yard work, time with the kids and the two mins with my wife. And she is doing the same thing.. Its just the time. People say you can make time.. yeah you can but if i did i would have to take away one of the things i mentioned and I can't. If it was not so expensive to live then me or my wife could be home with the kids and then we could as a family do something with our town. Time is just to hard to make.

Time, money, mostly time. We're all so busy just "keeping up with the Jones" to give ourselves time to get involved.
This is also the same problem with parents who are too busy to actually be involved in their children's lives. Sad isn't it?
