Prednisone as you may already know is a steroid. As far as over the counter (OTC) products they only steroid that you can get over the counter is hydrocortisone cream that wont do a whoe lot of good for the pain. Generally most pharmacies will be ok with giving you a few days until they or you can get a hold of the vet to renew the prescription. If they are not willing to do this for you and your beloved friend our Golden Retriver hurt his back once and the vet recommended Aspirin 162mg or half of an adult tablet. Keep in mind though that the dose is based on your dogs weight. So whatever dosage I tell you or anyone else is not going to be accurate for your dog. If you call your vet clinic and talk with the vet on call they should be able to give you an accurate dose. I hope this helps I know how hard it is to see our little ones in pain and not being able to do anything about it. Give him/her hugs from me and my little english bulldog Winston.

Acetaminophen is probably safe for most dogs but it causes liver damage in a small percentage of them.

Aspirin seems safe to use in most dogs but does cause ulcers or gastrointestinal upset in some dogs.

Advil and all ibuprofen products are very likely to cause ulcers in dogs. This can happen in as few as 1 or 2 doses with these medications.

Ketoprofen has been advocated by some vets for short-term use in situations such as post-surgical pain but advise against long term use and other vets report high incidences of ulcers associated with its use for more than 3 to 5 days. Naproxen seems to have some advocates and other doubters, as well.

Try to get the prednisone ASAP. It's not good to go off that stuff cold turkey. Call your vet and see what to give. We used Buffered or coated aspirin 325 mg. once a day-However, my dog was 135 lbs..I guess it would deoend on the size and general overall health of the dog. Good Luck

Here's a site with otc meds that are OK for most dogs. It shows the dosage by weight. This is OK in a pinch, but you better get back to the vet ASAP for her meds.
