The answer might depend upon your core philosophy! The duck was a life form and should be treasured as such. However most admit that ducks like other creatures are "lower life forms" and don't rate the same as human life.
There will be more ducks, one loss is sad but probably not tragic. Consider how many animals are prey (food) for others: do we morn their deaths or is it part of the food chain?
Some, like PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animal) and some of the SPCAs (Societies for the Preventation of Cruelty of Animals) might criticize you and accuse you of reckless driving, especially if you didn't stop to "provide care."
I think that it is sad that a duck died in a driving accident, but that after a little sorrow you can move on with your life.
I hope this helps.

I'd feel bad for all of 10 seconds. Ducks belong in or near water, ducks do not belong on the road. He should have looked both ways before crossing the road. Besides, they'll make more ducks. I'd do a quick check, though, to make sure nothing under your SVX got damaged.

Feeling bad about this would be a normal reaction. I would try to assess "fault" in this. Did the duck jump out in front of you so quickly you had no time to react? If so, I would feel only a little bad about it. If you saw it coming and thought "hmmm if I only had a second cup of coffee, I could have enough energy to hit this brake" then I would feel pretty bad.

You should always ask us before feeling anything. Did you ask why did the duck cross the road?
