All of the above but why did your desktop icons disappear on start up? Was the Desktop Clean Up Wizard running? To disable this annoying feature, right click your desktop, click properties, then in Display Properties under the Desktop tab, click on Customize Desktop. In the Desktop Items box under the General tab, uncheck the box marked run Desktop Cleanup Wizard every 60 days. Press OK.

Right click on the Desktop goto Arrange Icons By - and press a tick mark on Show desktop Icons....

right click on desktop...n click on the "arrange icon " an tick or untick at "show desktop icon"
