as i was watching a game some time ago (i believe it was USA vs Italy), i heard a comentator say that the ref was ruining the game by flashing too many cards (for tripping up players and swiping at legs). he said the ref was destroying the beauty of the game...
now, i'm not a big fan of soccer, but here is my take...
there is a reason why there are rules to the game. if it is against the rules to swipe an opponent's legs, then it should never be done. if it is done, there should be consequences. a ref should not ignore it any more than he should ignore other rules, like say offside. how would it work if suddenly the same spirit of leniency was extended to offside rules?
watching players trip each other up is not beautiful. watching players skilfully steal the ball without ever touching their opponent, on the other hand, is. but it is a lot harder than swiping his legs, so the game will never be beautiful until fifa lays down the law on this issue. if i was calling the rules, i would be a lot harder on this.

Tricky one to answer - the cost of a ticket to see a football match means that the fans deserve to see the best game, which would involve 11 v 11. Some refs do flash the cards to quickly, but if refs were instructed to ease off, then the game would be spoiled by all the cheating divers, elbowing players, etc. So on balance, no, they must send a player off if necessary.

Referee's do try to keep 22 men on the field. It is the men who get themselves the red card (in most cases).

yes,

that's what all referees should try and adhere to,

unless some player desperately wants to get off the field, then I guess the referee has to oblige - don't u think so? I mean, if you're a footballer, and an opposite player tackles u on your leg, and your whole career is gone, then?

Yes they should make it their job to keep as many players on the field ,and prioritise the fouls before they hand out Yellows or any cards. However there have been some very dirty soccer tackling and tactics and some of it was and still is intentional. It`s a slur on World Soccer .

If they were to apply the laws of the game and clamp down on the cheats the World Cup would be five a side

Some are no use like Rooney's marching order.............but some were dangerous and the player deserved it like De Rossi's marching order in the match vs USA when he elbowed McBride's face.

Of course, but don't forget some cards aren't needless.
