The individual turns out to be Logan.
But there is some ambiguity as to whether she actually knew it was Logan when she said "I was hoping it was you." Logan was standing in the shadows, and it's possible she thought it was Duncan. This point is never clarified in the show (but maybe I'm reading too much into it).
(Of course, later in season 2, she again mistakes Logan for Duncan, when he is unexpectedly sleeping in Duncan's apartment with a magazine over his face.)

That was the season finale, which had all the VM fans hanging and blogging all summer long over who that was at the door.....
let's put it this way, since the fun in VM is having things revealed just as other mysteries are underway.....maybe she THINKS its Duncan and that's why she's smiling. It's not Duncan. As we find out in the start of Season Two.
And no, Logan does not die.
That show is soooooo good!
