Quite possibly, Richard Nixon. According to Daniel Seligman, Nixon had an IQ of 143. This makes sense, because intelligent people tend to be more paranoid than the rest of society (Bill Gates has been often quoted as fearing that Microsoft will go belly up).

Of course, Abe Lincoln also had to be quite smart, since he was mostly self-educated. It's really impossible to do anything but guess about the early presidents.

Bill Clinton was probably the most intelligent president of our lifetime. Academically, he was a near genius, a Rhodes Scholar. His personal judgment wasn't the best, but he was a great president.

John F. Kennedy was also a person of great intelligence. Both he and Clinton have written books. George W. Bush on the other hand has nearly finished reading "My Pet Goat."

I would have to go with Polk.

He felt and i feel rightly that he achieved in 4 years all that he could do. And if you look him up you'll see that it was more than most men filling that office could do if we gave them 40 years.

We have had many great men before and since, but i feel James K. Polk did the most and there for is the most intelligent President to grace the office.

Most INTELLIGENT? John F. Kennedy or Franklin Delano Roosevelt, take your pick.

Best president EVER? Ronald Reagan, who's face should be placed on Mount Rushmore.

The question is about intelligence, not popularity. I think it was George Washington, because he wouldn't let them make him a king, and he helped keep religion out of the government.
