As a vegetarian for 15 years, I agree that the answer is astonishing. I am surprised with all of the available synthetic materials, advanced medical technology, and research that animal intestines are still being used to make dissolvable sutures.

Originally, "gut" sutures were made from the muscular layer of the sheep's small intestine, but the small bowels of cows, pigs, goats, and even horses have also been utilized.

Did you know that "gut" sutures have been banned in some countries because people are worried about the transmission of Mad Cow Disease?

I will take the polymers, please.

gut sutures are made of specially prepared

beef and sheep intestine,

and may be untreated (plain gut),

tanned with chromium salts to increase their persistence in the body (chromic gut),

or heat-treated to give more rapid absorption (fast gut).

According to my secret source "wikipedia" they were originally made from sheep intestines and invented by a 10th century Arabic surgeon. Now, however, they are made of synthetic materials.
