Map out a road course, including different types of driving conditions: highway, country roads, city streets. Get two vehicles, such as Honda Civic and Honda Civic Hybrid, with similar transmissions and equipped the same way. Fill the gas tanks of both vehicles. Drive the course you chose, with both vehicles. When back at the starting point, refill the gas tanks and you will know which used more gas. Both vehicles should have trip odometers, so you can measure the miles traveled then divide by the gallons used. Viola! you then get miles per gallon.

Hybrid cars are far more efficient than gasoline vehicles. Compare a Prius to a Jetta TDI, one of the most efficient non-hybrid sedans on the market.

Look at the stats - Jetta TDI = $21,605, Prius = $21,725
Jetta = 100hp, Prius = 110hp
Jetta = 177 lb-ft, Prius = 295 lb-ft (electric motor) + 82 lb-ft (gas engine)
Jetta = 36 mpg city, 41 mpg highway Prius = 60 mpg city, 51 mpg highway
Annual fuel cost according to the EPA: Jetta TDI = $1152, Prius =$784
Annual Greenhouse gas emissions: Jetta = 5.6 tons, Prius = 3.4 tons

The Prius makes more power, uses less fuel, and emits fewer greenhouse gases. It'll also save you about $400 a year on fuel than a Jetta TDI....and the Jetta TDI is already a very efficient car.

Does your hybrid use braking to help recharge the batteries? Does it require a battery charge from an external source? Where are you going to draw the envelope for measuring the efficiency? Do you want to include the energy expended in generating the electricity? The energy to refine the raw materials and manufacturer the various parts including the replacement batteries?

In simple terms what are you really trying to determine? Are you interested in which is really best for the environment or which is the most cost effective.

I'm offended!! Why on earth would we play around with 'half ***' hybrids when our atmosphere is being destroyed by oil!!? Look, the Hindenburg taught us all that hydrogen gas burns just like gasoline vapor! Hydrogen emits water when it is burned and nothing else. I suggest you ask your grandchild this question as you share your oxygen mask with them in a few years, I bet they'll find the question as ridiculous as I do now!
