My bf and I spent alot of money to get our car fixed that we bought a month ago, a cheap car, but we put in new gaskets, heads, and some other stuff. It still however needs a new set of spark plugs and something with the power steering. But my question is, he was outside tonight working on the doors of the car, the wiring is all messed up, he was trying to rewire them since they were crossed wired, and fix the radio. He was out there for about three hours and started the car about 3 times maybe within that time. And when we tried to leave to go to the store, the car made this horrible clicking kind of noise and the lights in the cabin dimmed and flickered. Also the battery thing reads -8 he said. So is it just the battery that is run down right now then?

Will a jump start fix the problem and let the battery recharge while driving it after the jumpstart? Sorry I don't know much about cars, but we did spend almost more fixing it then we did paying for it.

The car doesn't start either, just makes that noise and the lights flicker and dim.

The people who had the car before us ghetto rigged the stereo's cable to run directly to the batter O.O

Uhh...if he was messing with wires there's a good chance that its cross wired.....especially with the stereo....there's one wire that only gets power when the key is turned over...if he has cross wired that when you try to start it....its killing itself.....you can try and boost it off...but if that wire is crossed you'll have a dash full of smoke and possibly fire.....double check that stereo first........but if could be as simple as having the doors open it ran the battery dead.

He probably just ran the battery down leaving it connected while working with the doors open. Jump it and then just go to the local big chain auto parts store. They will come out to the car with a battery load tester and let you know if : the battery is just low, is being charged correctly or the battery is shot.

Charge the battery before you start the car. Alternators are designed to maintain a battery, not charge it. Sounds like he just spent alot of time working on it and the battery discharged. It should build up a charge overnight on its own if it is a good battery. Sounds like your BF isn't afraid to get in there and get his hands dirty. Good luck.

Jump start the car, are charge up the battery with a battery charger. If the car starts, have your friend measure the battery voltage again. It should read 13.5v - 14v with the engine running. If it does not, bad alternator. With the engine off it should read 12.5v min. (battery voltage ) . I am sure that he has a multimeter since he told you that he had 8v before.

Good Luck

Try giving it a battery jump,if it starts then the battery should be okay,it should charge while, the car is running,if it don't,then you might need a new alternator, that's what charges the battery.or it might nee booth.make shore the battery terminal are nice and clean, and check the fuel filter.

in case you put in your new automobile radio to an continually warm ability cord, this is going to spark on the battery. One ability lead of the radio is going to an ignition swap controlled ability source and the different ability lead (the only for the radio memory) must be the only one linked to an continually on source.

It's the autonator that's why the battery doesn't charge. If the battery is flat and the autonator is not working it can not recharge it.
