Hopefully you give this a moment of thought instead of just blurting out what you think society wants you to say because I already know what that is. I am asking more than just what it is you think about heroine addicts, addiction isn't that selective. See if you can imagine what it is like for someone struggling with an addiction other than the one you deny you struggle from.

the first thing that comes to mind when i think of addiction is drugs, cigarettes, gambling and alcohol. i've known several people who were addicted to drugs and it destroyed their lives and that of their loved ones. i imagine it isn't too much different with alcoholism or gambling.....my own husband and some of my relatives are addicted to cigarettes. most of them say they don't seriously intend on quitting either! a few have even said they'll lay on their death beds with a cigarette in their mouths and die happy. i used to smoke as well, but when i had my children i couldn't fathom the thought of losing 10 minutes of my life everytime i lit up.......when i think of the word addiction, only negative thoughts come to mind. people putting their uncontrollable urges above what they know is right or best. i've been lucky enough not to be faced with my loved ones suffering through an addiction to drugs or alcohol but i have sympathy for those who do. it's painful to watch someone you love so much slowly kill themselves, and they are aware of it but can't stop. as i always say.......it destroys lives.

Addiction is a chronic disorder proposed to be precipitated by a combination of genetic, biological/pharmacological and social factors. Addiction is characterized by the repeated use of substances or behaviors despite clear evidence of morbidity secondary to such use.

There is a lack of consensus as to what may properly be termed 'addiction.' Some within the medical community maintain a rigid definition of addiction and contend that the term is only applicable to a process of escalating drug or alcohol use as a result of repeated exposure. However, addiction is often applied to compulsive behaviors other than drug use, such as overeating or gambling. These behavioral addictions, however, almost never exist without another addiction to some substance. In all cases, the term addiction describes a chronic pattern of behavior that continues and is perceived to be hard or impossible to quit at any time. It is quite common for an addict to express the desire to stop the behavior, but find himself or herself unable to cease.

Addiction is often characterized by an ongoing effort to use more (drug or behavior), tolerance, and withdrawal symptoms in the absence of the stimulus. Many drugs and behaviors that provide either pleasure or relief from pain pose a risk of addiction or dependency.

Addiction is the longing for something that they think that they need physically to survive. Its a psychological disease that takes over their whole being. Their ability to deny themselves of the drug or alcohol is not strong enough to ignore the longing. Though they might be strong enough spiritually but its usually pressure that once they take what ever there addicted to, the longing or the physical pain will disappear. In my opinion of addiction its something that is taken by others too lightly. Its is a real problem not just lack of self control!

drugs have gone through my family and honestly any drug that is being used is terrible. I don't think that the person using drugs is a bad person i just think that they made a bad choice. Every single person in the world has made mistakes the idea is that we learn from them. I myself have never done any drugs however if you think about it caffine is a drug food is an addiction so there is more addictions than people think so how can someone judge someone else for an addiction when every single person in the world has some kind of addiction.

Well, I believe that addiction is in fact genetic, and a gene has been found that seems to be present in those who have substance abuse problems. I am not sure if this also holds for behavioural addictions, i.e. gambling, etc. but it may, as one does experience the same rush, and stimulus of the hypothalamus. In my work, I have come into contact with countless addictive persons, and one thing I have found is that they all smoke tobacco. I know they have said that Marijuana is the gateway drug, but I would dispute that as I think that it is Nicotine. I smoked tobacco for about 15 years and found it was very hard to quit, but I did finally a 8 years ago, using nicorettes. I also used to smoke Marijuana, but gave that up too, but it was much easier than tobacco. I am not sure if that answers your rather complex question, but I hope it gives you some insight into one man's journey.

Addictions are a problem if they are allowed to run your life in any way, shape, or form. You can't help an addict that don't want the help.

an addiction is nothing more than an outlet for your soul its either positive or negative but it all depends on what you think your level of pain is and how far you are willing to go to ease that pain. I dont judge people on their life styles I only judge based on how they treat me
