I really don't get it at all. How can a whole nation get so uptight and fanatical about what is basically 22 men chasing a ball up and down a field (actually only 20 men because 2 of them just stand around and watch the others and occassionally stop the ball from going into a net). So much money is thrown at it from the huge stadiums that are built to the debt that people incur to buy their annual season tickets to support their team, not to mention the shirts, memorabilia etc that they buy. Then the wages of the players. Ok, they are good ball chasers and they are fit (not complaining when they remove their shirts;) but at the end of the day, they are chasing a ball for 90mins....looks to me like it is just big boys playing little boys games, or men who refuse to grow up and want to stay in the playground....however, they manage to have a great lifestyle out of it because we pay them so much to do it.
Someone please explain, I really don't get it at all;)

ohhh btw....not knocking it, just taking another view, that's all. Everyone entitled to their own opinion and it's Sunday morning. Little bit of controversy to wake everyone up...works every time:)

It's indicadive of the times we live in, the "love them when they win, hate them when they lose."
This epidemic permeates every avenue of life today in our western world, not just sport, but marriages and relationships as well. Everything, including people, are throwaway commodities, if they don't come up to scratch and perform in just the way we want them to.
Just heard on the news that so many people were chucking away the English flag, it was congesting motorways.
So claiming the flag back for England from the BNP, wasn't showing pride in it at all, nor in our country, it was only for the footballers was it? How about having claimed it first, for some pride in our own nation. No wonder we are the laughing stock of the world today.
I agree with everything you say and would add that, if we must put huge monetary value on people, then pay them more than it takes to lift many smaller countries out of poverty, and enough to allow them to forget their humble origins, and behave as badly as they do in private, we deserve to lose.
Just think of all the good that could be done with all that money. Think of how two thirds of the world, poor souls who are hungry, sick and dying in disease and poverty could be helped.
Think of all the wells that could be sunk, to help them have even
a small a portion of normality, such as that which we take for granted. We enjoy watching them abuse their own good fortune inside drunkenness, lavish parties the cost of which could house so many homeless, and cavorting sexual habits and drug taking. We are a selfish nation in our spend, spend, spend mentality on needless material items.
I don't like the values of the world we live in, in this century, but like everybody else, I'm stuck with it. Unlike these wealthy footballers, I can't make a difference. These people had the chance to make a difference and instead they sit and cry and sullk, because someone else won the game.
It's a sport, not a war, their lives don't depend upon it, nor do ours, and to be 'sporting' means to win with grace, and to lose with even better grace and congratulate the winner.
Trust me, most of us, the sane ones anyway, are not uptight, just embarrassed by the way our once great nation, once respected, has gone from adult, down to the nursery slopes in the behaviour of it's heros, within just two short generations!
Our grandparents, everyone of them, who fought two world wars so that we could walk free on this land, and enjoy our sport, will be turning in their graves with embarrasment as well.

I think this game is far from a child's game, could you imagine how much punishment your body takes doing what they do for 90 minutes.
I mean if your American like me then you should know how little popularity there is in America so we don't see in Soccer what the world sees in it. It's just a sport that we'll never quite understand unless it's popularity increases with the younger generation.

Our country don't have much to get excited about and it's not just guy's who are football mad. The thing is until they invent another past time for us Brits football will remain the beautiful game. Besides think of the Party if England ever get their act together and win. I mean it would go on for weeks but no chance sob we're out till next time.

I think its everyone to there own, i don't really like football but its a big thing to the guys and some women, so if they are doing you no harm that i say get back to your game or marbles and let the rest enjoy what they enjoy. Is that easy enough for you to get?

It's personal opinion isn't it? I don't like many other sports (I do like football though!) so when there's a big tournament such as the world cup it's quite exciting to see all the different teams from around the world strutting their stuff.

Football is war, man needs war. it's like a controled battle between 2 countries. I have never watched a football game in my life, it's so boring, I'd rather stick needles in my eyes. I prefer bed games where both sides always win!!! Tony in remotest Isan.

Well, I just LOVE football (soccer) and I know so very many others out there do so too.
There's nothing to explain about it, if you're not in it, choose an other category, find something that interests you and post your questions there.
