Be honest with you 6 year old. Tell them, that the moon is a celestial sphere, 250,000 miles away, comprised of rock. That should lead to about 20 more questions, that you will spend the next 2 hours trying to answer. When you are completely exhausted and you are about to lose your mind, resort to lying, to save your own sanity, and tell your 6 year old that the moon is made of green cheese.

It's believed that the moon is left over material from a collision between the Earth and a proto planet billions of years ago. It is basically made of the same things that the Earth is made of....minus the water.

Tell them the truth, it's rock similar to the earth
ALWAYS tell children the truth
When they want to know where babies come from, Tell the truth, but at a level they can understand and keep it wholesome, like
1) from mummys tummy
later they is gonna ask how did they get there
2) daddy put the seed in there
it's easy if you stick to the facts, at six they will know difference between boys and girls
3)how did daddy put the seed in there - the seed went in the same way a baby comes out
it really is that easy to keep it wholesome for your kids
Santa clause, you gotta tell the truth always, or you gonna get lies back, my kids got presents ALL YEAR ROUND

Oh, don't you tire of obnoxious questions and answers on here? Anyway, didn't the astronauts bring back rocks from the moon? I keep asking questions to answer your question...I would take him to the library and find some books on the moon. It is never too early to help them start to learn to love reading and also researching when they have a question. I love libraries. Good luck.

I was told that the moon was made out of cheese and I was always hungry when I looked at it. Then when I was told the moon held the picture of a rabbit, I found it kind of comforting when I looked at it. My imagination took off. Why was the rabbit stuck there or who carved the picture ... =)

A lot of meteor fragments all clumped together and formed the moon. There are more and more hitting the moon all of the time and that is why there are so many crater marks on it.
