The short answer is that yes, some of them can. The problem is that of the 15k+ companies and individuals that claim to be able to improve your ranking only a handful fully understand SEO and emarketing. Employing just anyone is a waste of money and to show a return on investment you have to find the needle in the haystack.

Here are some basic questions you should ask a supplier of SEO services before making any decisions.

1. Ask for 5+ references and current clients and make sure you speak with all of them personally.

2. What type of reporting will they provide?

3. Do they offer Return On Investment (ROI) analysis?

4. Can they assure you that the optimization strategies and methods used will be ethical and hence guarantee no penalties for your website?

5. Do they place a link on their clients sites to their site? (You want a NO here!)

6. Ask to see a sample contract. Check that it says 'what is' and 'what isn't' required on the clients part and details what they say they will do.

7. How many hours will they put into working on your site?

8. Make sure you will not be 'ransomed' if you decide not to use them any more at some stage.

9. Do they outsource any of the work? (You want a NO here!)

10. What results can you expect and over what time scales?

Of course a good supplier of these services will not be cheap and it may be that your budget does not allow you to employ anyone good to do the SEO for you. In that case don't employ any of the other 99.9% of unskilled SEOs and throw your money away, do the SEO yourself!

If you do it yourself you must be prepared to put in a lot of time and hard work because there is no easy rout to the top. A good place to start is by finding a few top quality sites as a source of information, like this one for example http://www.seo-blog.com/tutorial.php.

Well i do see these website marketing companies as a real challenge sometimes why ? Well because you have to find out the geniune from the fake ! I had a couple of bad experiences with 1 software witch claimed to be able to advertise to 2.5 million prospects (called mega promoter) instantly and easily no prob. I thought bought the software and nothing absolute con ! then i tried the automatic hits software con too !!! The truth is no software can really get you ranked high in search engines or give you loads of hits. The only company i had a really good experience with was www.universalmailinglist.com/tmp/ this was a total legal mailing list company dma approved which provided me with opt in mailing list and built software from scratch purposely for my business soloutions. At first the traffic was slow but i got targetted consumers who brought stuff from my site. They also provided me with innovative linking software so my rank increased from 589 in the yahoo search engines to number 2 within 2 months ! what more could i ask for.

Not to be rude to Yahoo, but Google Webmaster Help Center has the best answer on weeding out the bad SEO services. See source URL below.
My own short answer is that search engine ranking takes time and effort- so any service you can buy for 'cheap' is not worth the money in the long run. That's not to say there aren't tools that you can use, but they only make the required effort easier-- but not EASY. Nothing worth having is easy, right?

(fyi, I provide these types of marketing/seo services but plugging them or my website IS against the TOS Content and Usage #6)

I do it all the time. I teach others SEO and SEM with a Free podcast. I write weekly articles and run a forum. If you don't hire me you can learn from me. The point is that there have been people in this businesss for years. Others are fly by night. Just remember increase in traffic doesn't equal sales. I work with clients that were getting 1,000 hits a day and making only 20 sales.

After we optimize it they were getting 800 hits and 120 sales. So, never go for more is better. People can buy un-targted traffic to your site. That doesn't mean a thing. What matters is how it converts.

If I really thought they could help I might try one, but I don't.

Use common logic. If it was that easy or they were that good, there would be so many the problem would recreate itself!

Besides, the way to the top of a search engine is to start a blog or even better a podcast. You can do both for FREE, so why hire a company that just wants your money?

You should forget all these website businesses and try the most efficient and best way advertise. www.pixelterminator.com
is a good little site if any of you know about pixel advertising that is the future ! you select how many pixels you want to buy then upload you ad pictures to a website then it creates a direct link to your website for all to see. It ends up like a big picture montage brilliant !!
