A gap in the geologic record. Rock layers are deposited like the pages of a book -- the oldest being on the bottom under usual conditions. If part of these rock layers are eroded away or simply not deposited -- an unconformity is produced. Part of the earth's history is missing. The fossil record is incomplete. There is no place on earth where there is a complete geologic record in the rock layers.

Unconformities are the geologic features which convinced Hutton and Lyell that the earth was old. An unconformity is a period of erosion found between two rock layers. The evidence of erosion can be severe or mild, but the interval does represent a significant period of time between the deposition of the older (lower) rocks and younger(upper rocks).
