OK, well the second Generation Punto is safe, refined and well equipped for a small car. Yes they suffered with problems, but nothing unusual there with any car.

Things you should be aware of though, Has the car been serviced at least every 12,000 miles (Sould have been done at 12,000 & 24,000 & 36,000) If it is a diesel then it's every 6,000 miles (should be done at 6,000 & 12,000 & 18,000 & 24,000 & 30,000 & 36,000). How many owners has it had? (More than 2 then walk away) Who were they? (Young drivers or older? If they were young chances are they used to race the engine and Fiats are not race cars, or no where near!) Also Be aware of Fiat's Corrosion plague. They rot really bad if allowed. Check every door, inside and out including sills, the boot, the bonnett, under every wheel arch, and betwen he bumpers and bodywork.

One more thing to be wary about is the electrics, They have in the past been known to short, so all you need to do is make sure Lights/Indicators, Radio, Heater, and electric windows are all fine. Also press the horn for 2 seconds to make sure it is loud and consistant.

Good luck if you decide to purchase and don't forget to find out what warrenty the dealer is offering (on finance if it is 3 years, you want 3 years warrenty on the car etc...) Also it would not hurt to get AA/Rac Cover for you're new car for a year to make sure that the first year of ownership is trouble free, and keep it clean, polished and serviced and it will last you 15 years if you want it to!
