Pregnant women do not "get ill" if they change the litter box. A pregnant woman *can* get toxoplasmosis from cat feces. However, if the woman has had a cat for a number of years, she is most likely already immune to it. Still, to play it safe, she shouldn't change the litter box unless she has had a titer to know for *certain* she is immune.

On the other hand *someone* should change the litter!! While the smell of cat urine isn't dangerous, it is certainly disgusting, and she shouldn't be living that way. A titer can be done with a simple blood test, she can find someone else to do the job, or she can toilet train her cats (yes, that actually *can* be done). There is no excuse for the smell permeating the house the way you described.

Toxoplasmosis is a disease that can be transmitted from cats to humans (although other infection routes such as undercooked meat are much more frequent). If a pregnant woman is infected with this parasite for the first time during a pregnancy the effect on the baby can be severe. She should not handle the litterpan during the pregnancy and should wash her hands after handling your cat. Toxoplasmosis is much more likely to occur in outdoor cats as it is transmitted to the cat through hunting of small animals.

There are conditions cats can have which are transmissible to infants or even older humans under some circumstances. Ringworm, a fungal infection, is one example of a zoonotic (transmissible to people) disease that affects cats. Toxocara infestation (roundworm infection) is another

Holy cow, altho toxoplasmosis is a serious disease it is transferred from your cat to you by getting feces in your mouth which I would hope everyone in the house is smart enough not to do.
Most doctors will tell you if there is not another person in the house who can clean it instead of the pregnant woman than she should wear gloves and wash her hands afterwards.

Why doesn't someone go help the poor woman and help her catch up on her cleaning for god sakes.

Cats smothering babies? apparently you have never had a cat nor baby?

Toxoplasmosis is caused by a parasite the pregnant women can catch if they come in contact with the cat's dirt box--so someone else needs to change the litter.

If the litter isn't changed (because no one else will do it) then the litter may get spread around as the cat tries desperately to clean up, and it may give up and go other cleaner places around the house. In that case the mother could still come in contact with the feces and the germs that are in them. She may not even feel sick, but her baby could become infected and suffer damage.

So someone else clean up the box!

I know that later in life, there are possibilities of getting schizophrenia from the cat droppings, and when you are pregnant you are supposed to have someone else clean the litter. That is all I know about it. But that woman should have someone clean the litter, or have someone watch the cat until the baby is born.

I don't know of an illness caused by that, but I have heard that cats can sufficate a baby because they are attracted to their breath. They will cover a babies mouth with thier mouth. Tell your friend to beware. I'm not making this up.
