Rumors persist that the lost Ark of the Covenant, of biblical fame, is housed in a specially guarded temple in Ethiopia.
Ethiopia has fallen victim to severe drought repeatedly in the last several decades.
Ethiopia is often torn by government and civil strife. Most notably was the recent war with Eritrea, which resulted in many small-scale genocides and mass starvation.
Like many countries in Africa, the people of Ethiopia are kind, but worn down by repeated problems. AIDS, poverty, preventable but deadly sicknesses like malaria, and the well-publicized food shortages cripple the country. The government is often accused of being corrupt, and people struggle to make ends meet.
However, I'm willing to bet that if and when I travel there, I'll be welcomed warmly by the people.

Unique among African countries, the ancient Ethiopian monarchy maintained its freedom from colonial rule, with the exception of the 1936-41 Italian occupation during World War II. In 1974 a military junta, the Derg, deposed Emperor Haile SELASSIE (who had ruled since 1930) and established a socialist state. Torn by bloody coups, uprisings, wide-scale drought, and massive refugee problems, the regime was finally toppled in 1991 by a coalition of rebel forces, the Ethiopian People's Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF). A constitution was adopted in 1994 and Ethiopia's first multiparty elections were held in 1995. A two and a half year border war with Eritrea ended with a peace treaty on 12 December 2000. Final demarcation of the boundary is currently on hold due to Ethiopian objections to an international commission's finding requiring it to surrender sensitive territory.

Ethiopia is a beautiful country, with beautiful women. It is the only African country that wasnt colonised and actually defeated the Europeans who tried to colonise them. It has a history and a civilisation that is thousands of year old, and a rich culture with over 80 ethnic groups.

Ethiopians are beautiful people. Unfortunately the government
was communist for quite a while, which is a blight on any
nation. Coffee was first discovered in Abyssinia. They have
the only African alphabet and its 126 letters. Imagine trying
to learn those ABCs.

If Iam not wrong, I think it was the place where the Hebrew people first settled and where most of the Bible stories come from. this is where king Solomon lived and now with the invasion of foreing powers it is a very poor country that does not remembers its glory.

Like the rest of the world the people love their country and fear their government. If there were not governments (or organized religions) most people around the world would get along fine.

Since I was a child, it has been embedded in my head that it is where the most poverty stricken of all poor live. That idea is still there, all because of numerous informercials similar to (or probably Sally Struthers' charity work for that nation.
