On the A1 at Alconbury, there is a 4 lane stretch of motorway. My question is - why do women and the occasional male (my experience), insist on sitting in the 2nd lane, so that everybody else have to go around them. Even though the first lane is empty.

All down to teaching!
The problem is, that as soon as you pass your test, you can drive on the motorway without any further instruction. OK, you could take the option of taking motorway lessons, but most people don't because they've already paid a fortune to pass the standard test. Yes, motorway driving is included in the highway code, but most people seem to forget a large percentage of this when they throw away the L plates. The government should do more with an advertising campaign to make people aware of the rules of motorway driving.
Motorways are safe places to drive if you follow the rules, i.e. move to left after overtaking, travel at speeds consistent with the weather and traffic conditions, look well ahead, safe distance between you and the car infrony - think also means, don't pull infront of some one and brake!
Remember their is no such thing as a "fast lane" or "slow lane", the speed limit (for cars) is the same in ALL lanes - 70MPH, unless advised by road signs.

Its all about teaching and confidence and being sure where you are going, if you are indecisive or unsure of yourself the motorways are a mine field so its just easier to stay neutral, in lane 2, if you know where you are going then you just go for it in lane 4.
However you will probably find that a large percent of slow lane 2 drivers are on the mobile phone

I understand that on the autobahn in Germany by law all drivers have to drive in the right traffic lane and the left traffic lane is reserved for passing the slower automobiles then after the pass is complete the auto passing the other auto has to return back to the right traffic lane.I think that is the way it should be on all motorways.

Oh god, this is so bloody annoying, even on a 3 lane stretch, with a clear road, they sit in the middle lane!

I tell you, it's just pure laziness. Lazy *** drivers who sit in the middle lane so they don't have to pull out and overtake when they eventually catch another car up.

I catch them up when I am going along in the inside lane when there is no traffic at all. They see me coming up the inside lane, make no attempt to move over, and are happy for me to cross over into the fast lane to get past them.

I now cut in front of them as close as I can get, and touch my brakes!

Thats common throughout the UK, usually known as a middle lane hog. I think they beleive the left lane is for trucks, mind you sometimes they will hold a truck up on a 3 lane motorway as its illegal for the truck to undertake, or to use the far right hand lane..

That doesn't help me much know that this happens worldwide!

It seems there is no escaping this problem. I think instructors need to be much better on these finer points of rules and manners on the roadways.
