I have no sound again (Im crying at this point). I was downloading the driver for my webcam and the sound just stopped. No error messages or warnings. No viruses. In the device manager it says everything is working fine. The speakers are plugged in and work fine. I cant find anything wrong with troubleshooting, its not muted, the system volume, task bar, and speaker volume is up. It plays all media just fine-but I cant hear it- the system sounds, mp3's, cd's are inaudible and the headphones have no sound either. Ive already reinstalled the driver to the sound card and moved the speaker and headphones to all possible plug ins - what the else could it be/can I do to restore sound?

Try this. Go to Start / Settings / Control Panel / Add/Remove Programs and remove your new webcam and see if that fixes it.

Sometimes other programs use the same ports as programs we're already using and although the Device Manager may not show it, there's a "plug" or jam there with 2 devices trying to use the same port. You can always re-install the webcam. If that's not it, you actually may need to buy a new sound card, you can get these cheap at Wal-Mart or Best Buy. The same thing happened to me and in the end I replaced my sound card.

There are only two possibilities I can think of that would cause this:

1) The sound properties in Control panel are not set correctly or have been changed by an installation somewhere. Check to make sure that the recording and playback devices are correctly set.

2) The sound card is damaged in a way that the computer does not see. This is not common, but not unheard of. You may have to install a new audio card if option 1 does not work.

Good luck...

If you have Windows XP or Windows 2000, you can restore your system to a point before you installed the camera driver.

Go to Start->(All) Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore

Select "Restore Computer to an earlier time" and follow the screen directions to select a date before you installed the video driver.

Note: you need Administrator Privledges to do this
