The egg came first. From evolution, in the ocean from microbes, next came the fish, then amphibians, then reptiles. The reptiles were the first to lay eggs with a HARD shell (to protect the embryo from the land environment).

Birds evolved from reptiles. If you look at the feet/legs of a chicken, you will be reminded of reptilan scales/skin. This is the residual evolutionary clue. And so, the egg DEFINITELY came first; then the chicken, followed by "why did the chicken cross the road" jokes
