The book came first. Roald Dahl hated the first movie adaptation so much that he wouldn't allow them to make the sequel; that's why the new movie is way more like the book, and way different than the orginal movie.

The book came first. That's what usually happens anyway, isn't it? Like the Lord of the Rings, Narnia, etc. I can't think of a book that was based on a movie.
