PAP smear checks for cancer of the cervix ...
It is advised that you have this done once you become sexually active or 18 yrs of age. The cancer that invades the cervix is spread with that little pesky virus that causes genetial warts.. YES I AM TELLING YOU THE TRUTH.. there working on a vacine but until then.. and lots of people have the virus and no out break of the warts..
If you have a primary care physican you can either have this dr do the test or you can have a gynecologist or a nurse praticiner do it.. YES IT IS IMPORTANT... I suspect your young you can get testing done for this and STD's at Planned Parenthood or a county health clinic or a medical school.. You do not need your parents consent to have a pelvic exam. Ok I bet you have no clue what your in for. you are going to have to lay on a table with your bottom schooched all the way down to the edge your feet will be up in these stirrup things and the dr or NP will insert a speculum in side your vagina and open it up. They will take a instrument with possible little brushes on it (these are best it obtains a good sample of tissue only dead skin cells). it only takes a minute or two at most.. they can perscribe birth control at the same apointment and probably get a good stach of condoms for free use them... and in most states if it is a male dr doing the exam they will be required to have a female nurse or assistant in the room... If not I would insist that they have the nurse in your room .. you will have on a gown and most provide you with a sheet to lay over your lap. USUALly you will have a breast exam done at the same apointment dr will feel for lumps and check for discharge and inquire if your doing your self exams.. good luck and do pratice safe sex..
