Using water to clean oneself, in lieu of toilet paper, is common in India and Muslim countries, where people use their left hand to clean themselves and their right hand for eating or greeting. The use of water in Muslim countries is due in part to Muslim sharia which encourages washing after defecation. The lack of availability of paper in the Mideast and North Africa during the early period of Islamic history probably promoted this regime out of necessity. Toilet paper is not as rare today in these households, but in many countries, a hose with a water sprayer (called a "health faucet") is found instead. It is installed right next to each toilet. Like this people can wipe their butt with their left hand and they use water. Once done, people wash their hands with soap and water. They wash their hands very often during the day as they have to do so at least before each of the 5 daily prayers following the Coran.
People never use their left hand to eat or shake hands. It is reserved for the bad things.
In large malls or hotels you will always find toilet paper next to the toilet and the water sprayer, but in smaller places with less Westerners passing by, very often there will not be any paper available because it is just something people do not need and do not think about.
Living in the Middle East for the past 4 years, I assure you that it is not the end of the world! If you are ready to be tolerant and accept other cultures, you just learn to live with it.You try to go to the toilets at home so you can use your favorite toilet paper, or you carry some tissues in your pocket or bag.

Hey what the heck is the purpose of this question. What ever you do the main purpose is to clean that is achieved. People living in cold countries and water scare regions use toilet paper. Those how use hand make sure it is cleaned and not like the paper users who do not even know wether they have properly checked their hands.

ONE of the hottest-selling items in Arab countries is toilet paper bearing the image of Old Glory, according to Mary Anne Marfoush, a Middle East specialist with the Department of Foreign Affairs!
"It's possible that as we speak, thousands of people in Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Libya, Afghanistan and elsewhere are wiping their butts with the stars and stripes," the diplomat reveals. "It's a very disturbing trend to say the least."

So I guess they have toilet paper

From what I have seen in my travels. Most do use TP. They use their left hand to do so. That is the reason why they always shake hands with their right hand. It is consider to be offensive to offer your left hand to shake. The left hand is unclean. In the poorer parts of the middle east this may happen, but you can say the same thing for many parts of the globe not just for this region. TP is used if it is available.

Hi,
YES I wipe my butt with my left hand using water. then i wash my hands by soap and water.
note that
- I wash my hands more than 10 times per day.
- 5 times " for prayers". while doing "WODA"
- before and after eating - breakfast, lunch , diner and snacks-
- After waking up on the morning and before going to bed.

Also, I do the right things with my Right hand and Bad things with left hand, for example:
With Right hand Only, I eating, shaking.
with Left hand only, I touch dirty places like wipe my butt.

Moreover, eating/drinking and shaking using right hand is an Islamic traditional.
