I would choose Dallas/Ft Worth over Houston. I have lived in both places.

Houston is closer to the coast, BIG FREAKING DEAL, have you seen the water at galveston? its like swimming in nasty chocolate milk. NO I am not kidding, see the silt from the mississippi fills the gulf and the water currents cause that silt to head towards texas, the water is dirty cloudy for hundreds of miles, before clearing up. If you are a beach person and think houston will keep you closer to the beach you will be sadly dissappointed. I have lived on the west coast, visited florida, and mexico, and the caribbean. I will NEVER go to a texas beach again. Sorry I just need to say that, because sure when I was young and had never been to a beach besides the ones in Texas I thought it was nice... till I went elsewhere....

Both cities are comparable on most levels. Dallas is more 'cosmopolitan' than Houston. Houston is more laid back. Dallas felt a little more materialistic. Dallas is more segregated. The alternative lifestye crowd is bigger in Houston. Dallas has zoning and planning, Houston has none. Houston is dead flat. Dallas is slightly more rolling. (that is relative though, Austin is very rolling) Dallas is close to many nice lakes (some of those beaches are better than the coast) Dallas is HOT in the summer, but Houston is HOT and HUMID (which is way way way worse). Dallas gets ice storms and tornadoes and once every few years snow, Houston gets flooding, tropical storms, hurricanes, occasional tornadoes, and once in 20 years a snow, PS last time they said it snowed I personally wouldnt count it, as it was more like visible rain, since as soon as it touched down it melted. School systems are comparable, both citys have schools to avoid and schools that excel. (mainly city schools, vs suburb schools). People in both cities are relatively nice. Houston has a higher immigrant population, AND many New Orleans escapees are still living in Houston, I have heard making jobs more scarce, but I left Houston last year before Katrina hit so I wouldn't know first hand on that.

I will never move back to Houston, Dallas I would.

Houston Vs Dallas

Houston all the way, so much to do here. There is a great night life here in the downtown area. Also, many job opportunities, houston is growing at a very fast rate. Downside would be the humidity but besides that Houston is very diverse and generally everyone gets along. People here are just nice to each other. Good ol southern hospitality! H-town for sure! Oh and btw not sure what you meant about the caucasian thing but yes there are many whites, but also there are many blacks, hispanics, asians and any other ethnicity you can think of! It's an awesome city! Don't know much about dallas but from everybody I've spoken to from Dallas and from Houston, they all prefer Houston! Have fun where ever you end up and be safe.

I've lived in both Houston and Dallas. I think there has been alot of good info given here, with the exception of the racist remarks (too white). Thankfully everyone in Texas isn't racist.

With that said, Dallas has a greater cultural feel, more class. Houston is friendlier, more Texan flavor. Some Dallasites can be snobs.

It's true, Dallas has great restaurants. The traffic is bad in Dallas but not as bad as Houston.

Houston is worst in these areas. Humidity!!! Dallas is alot drier most of the time, although Dallas can have colddd winters. You see more of a seasonal change in Dallas. Houston floods. And I agree, Galveston has dirty water at the beach.

I haven't checked on this but I would imagine that Houston has a higher crime rate. It also has a ship channel, which implies a need for greater homeland security in that area.

A few years back, Dallas was voted the top city in the country for doing business. The economy is very good here. Lots of job opportunity.

My vote over the two, Dallas. But both are far too large for my taste, in terms of being crowded/congested. I've lived in Dallas for almost 6yrs and I've never liked it here. I also feel Dallas is boring. That's why I'm moving to another state, with beautiful beaches.

Houston Or Dallas

All this business about Houston being bigger cracks me up. Houston proper yes, but Houston as a metroplex no. Check the US Census Bureau Metropolitan population stats. DFW has Houston beat by over a million and they even include Galveston and Huntsville in Houston's numbers, which are definitely not truly part of the metro area. Houston is like a big country town. If you want big city amenities with a small town mentality choose Houston. If you prefer a more cosmopolitan vibe and want to live around people who are not closed minded and lost choose Dallas. More to do, better shopping, cleaner, richer, and growing faster than Houston.

Houston is better. The unemployment rate is much lower. The traffic is a lot worse though, there are a million more people in Houston than dallas so that is expected. The food in Houston is better than in Dallas. THe is a much larger variety. The climate though is a lot worse in Houston, it is hot and muggy in the summer but really nice in the winter. Houston is closer to the beach, about a 45 minute drive, dallas has no beach. I would choose Houston.

Find a really good job and move to a suburb. If you don't mind the humidity, Houston is closer to the coast. I happen to like Dallas and Fort Worth and that is the area where I live. If you move to the Dallas area, try living somewhere in the mid-cities(suburbs). Hurst is nice. It has a really good school system if you have kids. If you are in school or thinking of going back for a Master's then there are numerous universities. The entire area is just loaded with them. As far as culture goes, you can find just about anything you want from pure white bread to areas which are entirely one culture to ones where it is a total mix.
Advice: Wherever you decide to move call the local police for information about which areas have more crime than others. You may have to call several times to get someone who is knowledgeable and willing to take the time to speak with you about it, but you'll be glad you did.

Lived in Texas most of my life, in the Dallas area. Lots of stuff to do in both cities. Houston is bigger. The traffic in Houston is terrible. Dallas is not much better. Just depends on what you want out of your place of residence. I have been to both places, and think that they are pretty close to the same as far as the quality of life and access to services and recreational stuff. I will say this, summers in Dallas are rough, but Houston's are terrible. They are so close to the Gulf the humidity is always really high. Consider some of the suburbs instead of the city itself. I live and work in Arlington, which sits in between Dallas and Fort Worth, and I love it here.

My goodness HOUSTON! Dallas is a so ugly and boreing. Here there's tons of things to do- it's the 4th largest city in the US with the second largest theatre district in the US too. We have a cultually diverse city (VERY) it's a melting pot for everyone. Here there's so much to do, for everyone of every age and real estate is cheap. Make sure if you do pick Houston to find a good location inside the loop. Not sure why you're asking about the "white" population but you did so, Houston has a bit of everything. If you want to live in a "white community" you can, (Bellaire, West University) If not you can live where everyone is (Montrose). Not sure either where you're coming from but Dallas is really hard to get used to for anyone not from Texas. The two cities are not alike in anyway. ----- If I were to make a choice of where to live betwen the two it's totally Houston. But, for Texas as a state I'd live in Austin.
