Smart does not mean that one is a reader, but certainly readers are smarter because of the level of information that they ingest. A reader must retain what they read and use it in the ongoing, lifelong education process. While reading, one must ask whether the author is in the know. The reader must make the distinction of whether the author is qualified and is processing the correct information. A doctor, who is an author on the side, can mislead people if he/she does not have the correct information. That is why is is good to read many things. That way you can decipher what is real and what is false.

I would hope that reading would broaden our intelligence. How could it not? I read tons, although, I may not be smarter, I can however converse on a wide variety of subjects. Simply because of the exposure from reading various articles, books, etc.

P.S. Not a fan of the profession of physicians. They are robots plugging away for the green. I have found that the ones I have dealt with are not compassionate.

However, if you manage to have all three, than you are pretty smart!
I think common sense and street smarts are more valuable.

It would depend on what they are reading. Also, learning to read and write hasn't hasn't always been an option for everyone. Intelligence can't always be measured by standardized testing.
