Always give "year", make, engine size and model # when asking questions.
-Always check the oil level when the bike is upright (as if sitting on it).
-Before changing the oil, I remove the L fairing lower. Easier to drain the oil. Make a ramp out of cardboard. Place under the oil filter to guide the oil to the left so it doesn't get on the pipes making a mess.
-The oil drain bolt is on the bottem "left side" of the motor (you need a 17mm wrench)
-Remove the bolt, drain the oil, install a new crush washer if needed and re-install the bolt.
-Remove the spin on oil filter.
-Dip your finger tip in oil. Wet the o-ring of the new filter and install it (no wrenches, nice and snug, hand tight).
-Oil fill cap is on the right crankcase cover. Add 20w50 motorcycle oil to the top of the oil level sight glass. Don't use car oil. It can't handle the deposits left behind by the clutch friction plates. If you do use it, you'll just have to change it twice as often.
-Start and run the bike for a couple of minutes (to let the oil circulate through the motor and oil filter).
-Stop the bike and let it cool down for a few minutes (to let the oil drain down to the crankcase).
-Top off the oil level to cover 3/4 of the sight glass.

AG - You don't drain the oil by removing the oil filter on a YZF600 and it doesn't have an oil tank.
Phaedra is right. You can barely see the oil level sight glass. It's on the right side of the motor near the front. Remove the R fairing lower.

I agree - vital to get the new crush washer before you start

Also check the bike manual for the torque setting for the drain bolt and carefully use a torque wrench to tighten it. If you tighten too much and strip the thread in the sump it is a serious problem.

Take the used oil to a recycling centre and do not get it on your skin - it is cancerous.

(on reflection, take the bike to a shop for your oil change! They will put the bike up on a ramp and make sure all the old oil comes out)

Use the best oil you can - synthetic or at least semi-synthetic.

allmost all jap bikes are pretty much the same, bottom of the motor is a Big bolt right in the middle of the engine case.Crank that sucker out and the oil will drain out. put it back in with a new crush washer and put in the proper amount of oil.and by the way buy yourself a shop manual.

drain the oil out of the oil filter at the very bottom of the bike. then replace it with a new one. Then pour enough oil to fill up the oil tank and then ur done.

Ugh it's a huge pain in the ***...you have to take off the lower fairings and get down underneath. VERY hard to access on these bikes (I've got one too) but it should show you where in your manual.
