The question is based on false logic. The egg layer evolved, as did the rest of us, the question assumes an instant starting point.

Had to be the chicken.
If not there would be no bird to keep the egg warm until it hatched.
You could always compair it to another species.
For example; What came first; The embyo or the human?

The chicken is an actual chicken. The egg is a potential chicken. Since actuality must precede potentiality, the chicken must have come first.
