I presume you're talking about ferrous and ferric. It's been a few years but I think its ferrous for the lower valency. (Now that you know the terms you should be able to find out)

ferrous is for Fe+2 and Ferric for Fe+3

The trick to remembering valance is "ic-up" so ferric is higher than ferrous and stannic (tin) is higher than stannous and so on.
